Actually Sony also brought MS as their worst enemy by refusing to work with MS.

That's the first I've heard of that, how did Sony refuse to work with Microsoft?

From what I heard MS wanted to partner with Sony to make the OS on PS2, but Sony shunned them. So MS fearing that the sucess of the console could threaten their OS domination (by pushing PCs out of the screen) started Xbox... There were some threads about it here...

Well, I was thinking about sales and gaming company decisions and the fact that is´s not going to well for MS at the beginning of this generation. Then it struck me, it just might be the "third major console curse" that has fallen upon MS?? I am only talking about sales, in terms of quality in games, that is a whole other matter and the console I mention were all great in that regard.

Looking at the major game companies since the end of the 80´s: Nintendo, Sega, Sony and MS

Nintendo: Nes was hugely successful, and was followed up by the popular SNES, which in turn was followed by the not as popular N64 (I won´t count the misstep of Virtual Boy, Nintendo deserves better). Also, the cartridge format was bashed in media and from alot of fans.

Sega: The moderately succesful Master System was followed by the huge Mega Drive, only to be followed by the failure that was Sega Saturn and the imminent downfall of Sega. The early release of Saturn and obvious desperation from Sega pissed of both fans and developers.

Sony: With Playstation they took over the market, and with PS2 they only expanded upon their market cap. Although PS3 has sold extremely well by any measure, it represented a major downturn of the PS brand and sold about half of its predecessor. The pricing of the PS3 pissed of everyone in the beginning.

Microsoft: The original XBox was a decent entry into the market and with 360 they more than trippled the number of units sold. Now with X1, we see how it is already falling behind 360 in monthly sales and probably in total sales soon. Almost everything with the original concept seemed to piss of everyone.

So, is there a third major console curse and if so, why?

I fail to see how the Master System is a moderate success while Saturn is a failure

LT Sales

Saturn: 9.5m

Master System: 10m

????

They were just starting out and out of a crash unlike Saturn which came out in an established market with an established brand.  Playstation is the only console to really come out gangbusters in its first attempt if we're counting Game and Watch for Nintendo

PlayStation was created because Nintendo shunned Sony and the Xbox was created because Sony shunned MS! Hmm.. I wonder if anyone will get shunned by MS!

Thanks, it's quite interesting to see how and why companies got into the console business.

Yes... if company weren't greedy and wanting all the market and benefits to themselves we would have a HW dev by Sony, a OS dev by MS and 1st parties by Nintendo... a "perfect" but boring console and a big monopoly.

Thank god they like to fight out.

It really does seem that the big four are connected in alot of ways, considering MS also made the OS for Dreamcast :).

Also, I should've included Atari, since they really hit their stride with the 2600.

Ouya got shunned by everone, even customers.

So is Ouya the worst competitor of MS or is the worst enemie of customers?

And Now being more serious, haven't MS pushed Valve off with Steam? And tham is not only that could make MS lose a lot of customers to Steam OS, but also generated Steam Console (when is the damn thing finally show up?).

I wouldn't call that shunning what if Sony just liked their vision for the OS more?  I mean it's not like they struck a deal and backstabbed MS at the last minute

Oh that is true, Microsoft have already made themselves more competition with Valve. I don't see Steam boxes doing much, but Steam OS is definitely a threat to Windows.

Yep... I don't even know how VGC or NPD will chart SteamBox. But if SteamOS take of then MS may be headed for a fight. That could greatly benefit Sony.

I think people try to find trends when there aren't any in order to pose themselves as having some significant insight into matters.

The N64 sold 32M and the Genesis 40M. For me, that's enough to say that this whole thing is just lollipop sucking.

This

The human mind is brilliant at finding patterns, and it is easy to assume a pattern is significant when it isn't.

That's why if you ask someone to make a random tally of 100 coin flips in their head, hardly anyone would put 7 heads or tails in a row because they notice the pattern and it make it look less random.... but the chance of getting 7 heads or 7 tails in a row out of 100 coin flips is about 1 in 3 (I haven't done the math on that statistic personally though)
