Forums - Gaming - Sonic: The most overrated game ever?

Then I guess Super Mario and Donkey Kong Country weren't among those "better games"? VIRTUALLY EVERY great platformer is loaded with trial and error game play! These games were tough as nails, it was impossible to breeze through them without dying constantly and learning from your mistakes and doing better next time. It was the basic part of any 8 or 16-bit platformer's structure. I was both an SNES AND a Genesis kid back then, the best platformers on both consoles did this.

Neither Mario nor Donkey Kong relied on "impossible to see coming" death traps that necessitated trial and error.

Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the most important and revolutionary games ever made.

I get the impression you haven't played Donkey Kong Country's mine cart levels in a long time,  because they are my clearest memory of "impossible to see coming trial and error game play" that I can think of in old school platforming. Hell, Donkey Kong Country Returns is one of the best examples of this sort of thing in MODERN games.

I played Sonic 2 just yesterday for an article dealing with this issue. I haven't  gotten past Chemical Plant Zone in over a decade, and I was blindsided a grand total of two times through the rest of the game. There was a third occasion I used to be blindsided in Chemical Plant Zone, right before the boss area, that I remembered to avoid. It wasn't exactly a huge problem in the classic Sonic games unless you ran around like an idiot, like these guys were doing.

Important? Sure. But I wouldn't say most revolutionary.

I've played the SNES DKC games this year, same with DKCR. They are difficult and require split second reflexes, but you're never whizzing along so fast you can't see what's coming.

No. Super Mario is the most overrated easily. This is coming from someone who has both SMB3 and SMW in their all time top 10 and Yoshi's Island 2 in their top 20. After that SMB fell off IMO.

Next would be GTA.I don't think any of the games are great and I bought or played all except GTA4.

Add FF to the list too and I think FF7 is the greatest game ever made.

What do you think of the 3D Mario games like 64 and Galaxy?
