I'm quite pleased with the season thus far.

Chio's School Road and Asobi Asobase are both about school girls being assholes to one another and that's awesome.  The former is more character driven and the latter is a bit more absurdist but they are both very funny.

Cells at Work is interesting and a nice change of pace.  Reminds me of Moyashimon somewhat, which was an excellent anime that doubled as a science lesson.

Both of the new sports anime have been surprisingly good.  Hanebado! has excellent supporting characters.  I've been very impressed with how well they written.  Harukana Receive ep. 2 pulled me in and made me invested in the main characters.  Blonde twins next week?

Angels of Death is interesting and oddly fun despite being horror-ish.

Drop Kick on my Devil! feels clever and has good character designs but somehow isn't as funny as it should be.  It's still amusing, though, and I love the angel.

Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion should be an entertaining ride.  Hard to say after only one episode but it had a good start.

Grand Blue, like a lot of lowbrow comedies, dances all over the line between annoying and hilarious.  The manga leans on the same jokes a LOT in the first several chapters (alcohol and nudity related) but I'm guessing the anime is going to be more concise so it can fit in more stuff so that probably won't be as much of an issue.  Maybe.  Also, the hot otaku guy just kills me.

I watched another Isekai.  Master of something.  Well, I watched the first few minutes and skimmed the rest.  The first one was okay but this one was terrible.  It had that "chuunibyou" vibe to it.

Still several I haven't watched.

Edit:  Forgot about High Score Girl!  I've been meaning to get back into the manga.  I stopped reading it when it went on hiatus thanks to that SNK lawsuit, which was pretty silly considering it gave them free publicity.  It's set in the 1990s and is about a boy who basically lives for gaming, especially Street Fighter II.  That is, until he gets his ego totally wrecked by a pretty, popular, and much admired classmate, who is better than him at pretty much every game.  It's especially interesting for anyone who likes or lived through that period in video-game history.

Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion --

I don't watch anime that is currently airing, I hate waiting an entire week for one episode. Thus, I've been watching old and even older stuff lately, with the only recent releases being Violet Evergarden, Welcome To The Ballroom, and 91 Days.

I just want to recommend Violet Evergarden and 91 days TO EVERYONE. Never had I seen anything quite like them in anime. Arguably what made them so enjoyable for me, was the lack of clichés (for the most part in Violet) and anime tropes.

91 Days could easily be adapted into a weekly live action series, it is much more realistic and "human" than most anime. The typical screaming, girls with rabbid or cat ears, over the top facial expressions, and most tropes of that nature are absolutely thrown away. Art direction is superb for the setting they were going for, although the animation was clearly made in a low to medium budget. At its core, 91 Days is a crime drama with exquisite storytelling and pacing.

Violet Evergarden is beautiful to look at, wonderful art direction and animation, accompanied by a classical music inspired soundtrack. Although some tropes do show up in a couple of episodes (and suspension of disbelief is a must if you don't want them to ruin the tone of the series), they're brief and far in between. One episode in particular, was so heart breaking because it portraits human emotions so realistically, without coming across as forced. The pacing is a little slow sometimes, but absolutely worth watching until the end. This is character development done right.

@bold, Agreed.

91 days was quite the enjoyable anime, I love anime setpieces as much as fantasy and space. It is unlikely to get a sequel, but I would most assuredly enjoy another setpiece anime like it. Bonus points for following the complete story through and through each episode.

Violet Evergarden, while beautiful was letdown musically for me. Maybe it is because I watched The Ancient Magus' Bride  right after, but a lot of the music was just unnecessary and amateur. But again enjoyable with its worldbuilding.

Generally speaking, the vanilla Isekai genre is a dumpster fire. It reminds me so much of when I first got internet and discovered AOL anime role-playing chat rooms.

G0kU1990x: ::powers up adn hits cloud:: KAMEHAMHA!!!
CLOUDXxx13: ::dodges:::
G0kU1990x: (U CANT DODGE I SAID I HIT YOU)
CLOUDXxx13: ::takes the hit staggers a little bit and smiles::: that all you got lol

Episode 2 of the Demon Lord anime was unabashed adolescent wish fulfillment. I was moderately hopeful after the first episode but it seems that was a mistake.

Don't make fun of Cloud just cuz he's not here!

I just watched the third episode of that and...it doesn't really change much. The overpowered guy is kinda amusing when it's played for comedy, but like One Punch Man, when it tries to be serious it just makes me blink in confusion and look around awkwardly. The ecchi fluff is...what it is. Made me chuckle a couple times but just normal chuckles not serious chuckles.

Oh wait I wasn't going to admit to watching that. *clears throat and changes topic*

---------------------------------------------

Decided to continue watching Holmes in Kyoto. It's pretty boring but it satisfies a rare itch for me I guess. Even if feels like the mysteries are mostly inconsequential...but maybe that's a good thing to keep it grounded.

In backlog land, I've been watching Sket Dance for a while now, and just got to Switch's backstory. Holy crap I wasn't expecting such a...dark direction with his brother getting stabbed and killed by the girl's psycho friend. It was good though, just felt like a huge shift in tone. Thus far I've been watching it as a high school Gintama clone, but it's started to feel like its own thing. So far Switch is my favorite character, we'll see if Himeko's and Bossun's backstories change my mind though.

Also next episode is the Gintama crossover. Heh...that should be fun.

Man, Cells at Work is so funny. I love how all those flu symptoms were represented with such dramatic action scenes. And that macrophage is...*bites lower lip*

And man, those Jojo references. DavidPro must be feeling nostalgic. Either that or they're practicing for Vento Aureo. Sooooooon...

New poll soon.

That first episode of the new season of AoT hits the ground running.

Winner of this poll is: Writing in English. Omoshiroi!!!

New poll is important. Question is, which is the best picture of Mao. See below!!

Nah I kid, I'll pick some normal anime poll question. Feel free to stare at my cat for as long as you want though.

Angolmois is disappointing.  The situation is still very interesting but it turns into shounen fluff when the fighting starts.  Japanese soldiers are the best, the team of exiles are amazing killing machines, the protagonist is a virtual superhero and genius tactician, the Mongol soldiers are weaklings who rely on numbers and trickery, etc.  Not the somewhat realistic approach I was hoping to see.

One of the tropes I hate the most is when five arrows kill five guys nearly simultaneously and then it shows the single bowman.  Yeah, right, if you're going to pull bullshit like that, at least animate the bastard's godlike rapid-fire mode.

That, and people calmly talking in normal voices while the chopping down enemies left and right.  Nothing feels more fake.
