I personally think it’s idiotic that MAL lets you rate an anime before finishing it anyway. I can’t remember the number of times a show subverted my expectations, either with an interesting plot development later or just squandering all its potential. The site either needs to block reviews for the first month, or have two separate scores depending on when they were made.

That being said, the final score there works fine as an aggregate, provided you don’t treat it as anything more than that. It basically tells me how the general anime community feels about the show. Whether or not I agree is another story.

Basically the same as Metacritic honestly.

I agree with most of that.  However, that they cut scores from people who haven't seen 1/5 of a series is a good step.  That means, with most anime, those who have only watched one or two episodes won't impact the final score.

At least, that's how I understand it.

Hakata seems interesting. Could turn into a good anime that's different or become a jumbled let down. There's already alot of plot lines to keep track of.

Yeah...at least something to cut out people scoring an entire anime based on only surface level impressions. I mean...sure I've dropped shows after one episode before, but I don't have delusions that I can speak to the show as a whole. I'm well aware that some people might dig what I don't.

I suppose it probably balances out on some level at the end, so it's really affecting the initial score.

The score doesn't mean much anyway. I mean No. 50 on the all time charts is barely 0.5 above No. 350.

That's a fair point...most of the scale isn't really utilized. I'd be curious what a bell curve of the overall scores for that place looked like. I'd bet the vast majority are between 6.5-8.5...only 20% of the scale.

Though it's much worse on manga sites. I remember a friend was talking up The Promised Neverland for having a 4.9/5 on a site we use...which was nice and all, but then I realized I've never seen a manga on that site rate lower than a 4.5.

Best Dog Poll is over! Winner was a 3-way tie between Iggy (Jojo), Ein (Cowboy Bebop), and Nina (Fullmetal Alchemist).

Feel bad for adding a meme now.

New poll is: Preferred way of watching anime

For me, I tend to prefer using paid services, though more out of convenience than any sense of moral obligation. Also most of the subs I use for anime are either pretty cheap or I already use for other purposes, so it works out nicely.

I suppose I flex a bit where that doesn't work out, which it seems I'll have to do this season, but usually I don't have much to complain about.

And what about you? *looks right at you*

Well this anime season has a very strong lineup, we have:
Violet Evergarden: Beautiful art, kinda cliché story and characters so far, I'm numb to these machine learning human emotions and loves someone premises.

Sangatsu no lion: Amazing, love the story, the animation, and art, emotional and funny and heartwarming.

Mahoutsukai no Yome: Love the setting and art, I wish it could have a more structured focus in terms of a narrative, I feel like the story still hasn't gone into high gear as yet.

One Piece: Started watching it since the New Year, love the characters and the story and the expressive art style, wish the fights were more technically sound since it's very lightly animated.

Yowamushi Pedal: Glory Line: It's still a good show, love the characters though I feel that using 3D animation in some instances hurts the show.

Dragon Ball Super: A rough start but the newest arc is the most hype thing I've seen so far, animation can range from horrid to dynamic and energetic, the new transformation is worth the hype.

Gintama 2018: After a less than stellar 2017 season where the comedy was kinda cheap this new season finally plays to its strengths with a gripping final story filled with fun moments and fight scenes.

Devilman: Crybaby: A fresh and edgy anime that modernizes the manga in all the right ways, with original, abstract and energetic animation, a great story with a brisk pace, characters that push the narrative in meaningful ways, a legendary soundtrack and overall the best show to start 2018 with.

I FOUND ANOTHER YOWAMUSHI FAN! FINALLY!

I sub to CR on a regular basis but sometimes I'll sub to fumination for a show I have to watch til it's over. I'll use other methods for stuff I can't watch thru a streaming service. Mainly, for the older stuff. 😈

Well, I finally started on some winter 2018 anime and the ones I started on are Ryuuou no Oshigoto! and Pop Team Epic.

Ryuuou is the light novel based anime about the high schooler who becomes one the highest ranked shogi players in the world but goes into a funk after winning his title. Then he meets an elementary girl who wants to become his pupil. And so starts this seemingly comedic anime of the high school shogi master and this lil kid.

-1st impressions are.. I'm not so sure. Perhaps due to watching Sangatsu as well makes this one seem outlandish, which I guess isn't necessarily a bad thing. The elementary girl is cute and funny, so that's a plus. The main lead's design looks bland in comparison. I'll give this one another episode or 2 before deciding whether to continue or drop it...

The 2nd anime, Team Pop Epic, is a bizarre one to say the least. It feels like a Japanese adult swim cartoon, which can be seen as bad. It's quite random with strange short gag moments and weird animation styles. If you read the manga, you'll know what to expect. This one I feel is gonna be a niche hit and miss one. I didn't like how it repeated the episode, but replaced the male voices with female ones.

I'll be sure to talk about other winter anime I check out.

Since I started watching anime in 2010 my attention span has been reduced to zero. I started out watching like 20 episodes a day and nowadays it's "I hope I can watch 3 without getting distracted.".

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I like to pay for Crunchyroll and I'm an Amazon Prime member but I download from illegal websites. That's because I live in a rural area and my internet is terrible for streaming.

Combo, because I have specific needs. Since shows are often split between multiple carriers, it is definitely impossible for me to pay for them all. And a lot of things still need to be improved in the US, but the progress is questionable.
