It's not about shorts. I watch quite a few shorts every season. This season Mahou Shoujo Taisen, Yama no Susume and Ai Mai Mii.

But I hate traps in any form. They're like bad mystery stories that show you lies to throw you off.

What about Stein's;gate? I'm not usually a fan of traps, but Ruka is wonderful :3

I just don't see what's wonderful about drawing a girl and pretending it's a guy.

I don't mind traps in the real world because most of the time you can tell but in anime it's just a straight up lie because it is drawn not as a guy crossdressing but exactly like a girl.

Have you seen Stein's;gate? I mean, all my points to why Ruka is awesome would be considered spoilers, but Ruka is a great character who benefits from being a "trap", instead of just using "trap" as a cheap character archtype. All character archtypes are pretty crappy when there is nothing else to their character.

The trap archetype can be done very well (case and point Stein's;gate) if the character is more complex than just being the trap character in a harem...

I don't care about the character of a trap or what it does. I'm put off by the whole concept of purposefully deceiving the viewer. That's why I compared them with bad mystery stories.

It's one thing to make a riddle and give clues about how to solve it but it's another to confront the audience with a lie that you would have no chance of finding out without the liar telling you himself. The viewer isn't even allowed to doubt because it is first presented as a fact and there is no reason to doubt.

I enjoy pretty much all those genres in the poll, but my favorite would have to be Action.

Once again, have you seen Stein's;gate? Because the first thing they tell you about the character is that he is a guy... I guess technically that disqualifies him as being a "trap" then maybe.

Still, I do think the character type can be done well. As much as I despise Haganai, the trap aspect was done fairly well, and it did give clues to allow you to figure it out beforehand and it did work well in the show's comedy...

I get what you mean when you say traps are like bad mystery stories, but I think a bad trap is like a bad mystery story, a good trap is something else entirely.

I actually quite enjoyed Qwaser. Of course because of the massive fanservice but also because the premise is just wonderfully ridiculous.

I wanted to try Himegoto but then I saw it's just a short and it's not really worth my time since I generally don't like traps. I'll only watch shows with traps if I have to. Like Maria Holic because SHAFT and Haganai because it's awesome and Buriki. And in the end Haganai did the best thing an anime could do to a trap, so it got triple plus points from me :)

Well, Himegoto is not about traps... is about a harem of girls abusing of a trap... and short animes are good too.. i have enjoying a lot recently, Therma Romae, Ore no imouto wa osaka-kan are some good examples...

Well, if they're honest about the character being a trap in the first place, there usually isn't too much of a problem. I mean, it's not like they lead you into believing they are a girl the entire season and then throw a fast one at you.

That being said, I completely understand that a lot of people don't like anime with traps, and that's fine. I personally don't really mind them. Tons of anime have had traps that I thought were great (Steins;Gate, Yahari Ore no Seishun, Baka to Test, etc)

That's the wonderful thing... is like kemono mimis, lolis, and other stuff that are only permited to exist in the universe of a anime.. looking for base on reality is just plain Wrong and You should be looking for a new hobby... because it doesn't make sense on a real life doesn't mean it have to on any manganime universe... stop thinking about it! Enjoy!

HEY! that's NOT A TRAP! That's a Hideyoshi!

And traps aren't really new on mangas and animes and games... looking back.. on Get Backers..

and on games Guilty Gear X have a trap too, and a loli-like sister trap at worst!

That just add variety to the series...

BTW... Shinatose Izana from Knights of Sidonia, is not a Man, not a Woman, is a third genre.. should be considered a trap?

Okay, so I just watched episodes 1-5 of Aldnoah.Zero. So far I have to say that I'm fairly bored watching it. It started with a clumsy infodump of technobabble (or techno-fantasy-political-babble), and moved into a rather generic mech show with the super smart prodigy beating the bad guy (and some simple subterfuge (ep 5 spoiler: Is the emperor really so stupid that he would just believe that guy? He was just told by someone that there were factions in their midst, performing some unpleasant deeds and he just believes the other guy with no question. He seemed to be smarter than that...I mean, its obvious by how horrible the knights are that they hunger for war...)). I will say that the MC is kinda interesting in how placid he is, but the fact that he can figure all this stuff out and the trained military can't do shit is baffling.

Anyone got any counter opinions?

There should be an "ALL" option in the poll, i dont prefer a genre i just like good animes regardless of their genre
