I just don't see what's wonderful about drawing a girl and pretending it's a guy.

I don't mind traps in the real world because most of the time you can tell but in anime it's just a straight up lie because it is drawn not as a guy crossdressing but exactly like a girl.

Have you seen Stein's;gate? I mean, all my points to why Ruka is awesome would be considered spoilers, but Ruka is a great character who benefits from being a "trap", instead of just using "trap" as a cheap character archtype. All character archtypes are pretty crappy when there is nothing else to their character.

The trap archetype can be done very well (case and point Stein's;gate) if the character is more complex than just being the trap character in a harem...

I don't care about the character of a trap or what it does. I'm put off by the whole concept of purposefully deceiving the viewer. That's why I compared them with bad mystery stories.

It's one thing to make a riddle and give clues about how to solve it but it's another to confront the audience with a lie that you would have no chance of finding out without the liar telling you himself. The viewer isn't even allowed to doubt because it is first presented as a fact and there is no reason to doubt.
