Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo Wii-U vs Nvidia Shield tablet(now $199!): A hardware comparison.

the wii us processor is is 3GHz, and the tablets resolution is 720p, so still ahead at least in the procesor. Like mentioned before you still need a remore to be able to play thats another ~$50, then theres game, assuming a quality game thas at least ~$30 dependin on the age, so the shield is up to $380 so far.

Finally the holly diferiantor is that most likely the shield is usseless without a pc to actually play the games, cuz the tablet is just streaming, then thats got to be at least $400-500 to have a pc that plays wii u level of games. so this is like a $780 investment, so still not even close.

Forgot to mentioned that the Wii U is the only one availible that can streame games of the console in full quality with almost no latency. Not even the vita can acomplise this. The wii U does not streame it through wifi like the shield, so to my knoledege its going to have a lot of latency, maybe  not game braking, but its going to be noticeable and people wont like it.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

Good, this means the tecnology for a Nintendo handled-home console hybrid is there.

Yeah I think this is the more interesting/revelant part of the discussion.

If Nvidia can sell something like this today with an 8-inch high resolution screen for only $300 ... I think certainly it looks like the door would be opening to perhaps a 5-6 inch Nintendo portable in spring/summer 2016 for say $200-$230 that can approximate Wii U graphics and can be sold at a profit.

This!

The main argument as I read it:

Less than two years after the release of Wii U you can get similar tech with smaller dimensions and less need of power.

This could mean Nintendo releases a cheap Wii U Light or uses tech like this in their next console.

Is this starting to become more of a doable reality ...

Nintendo Fusion (Handheld)

- 5.7 inch 1280x720 screen (cheaper than Nvidia's still good quality), multitouch. New rumble stylus.
- ARM CPU + Snapdragon GPU (customized by Nintendo), approx. 250 GFLOPS performance
- Can approximate Wii U style graphics at 960x540 resolution, less demanding games can run in full res.
- 2-2.5GB RAM (1-1.5GB for games, 1GB for OS).
- New Nintendo "Master Engine" allows for easier porting of Wii U and 3DS software to this new platform.
- $219.99 launch MSRP, Late April 2016 for Japan, May 2016 for North America, June 2016 for Europe.

Nothing about the wii u is 3 GHz, the CPU is 1.2 GHz. The gamepad is 480p.

Also, the wii u is believed to be 176 giagaflops.

This comparison is a waste of time. One's a portable device, the other isn't. Your WiiU tablet isn't moving much further than your couch.

Will it be all digital software? If "YES" then it will not need to have a Blu-Ray player and will be cheaper!

How much memory will it have? ...and what kind of memory?

As it is not a dual screen will it be called New Super GAMEBOY?

nVidia Shield undoomed confirmed!

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

It's worth noting that these GPU specs are for theorical performance and the tablet will be limited by TDP and refrigeration about how much it uses. And we can add that comparing Gigaflops is just a pretty horrible way to determine graphics performance. Just look at some high-end AMD R9 GPUs that almost double the NVidia Titan floating point performance but when we look at games they are equal or the Titan wins. Memory bandwidth (in this case it favours the Shield) and other things are more relevant.

About people claiming doom for consoles and saying that mobiles will surpass their performance, I'm sorry, but you need to study computing way more. Basic Moore's Law: doubling the performance takes two years. Add TDP concerns and you will be as slow as possible doing it. Consoles are at 250w. High-end PCs outperform them in brute force because they use way more than that. A Titan uses that. And a 5-10w device? This guy has a lot of terrain to cover. Shield tablet is here to give PS360 visuals because it uses a more advanced and efficient tech compared to the 2006 tech used by last gen. PS4, X1 and PCs use modern tech. Wii U uses a 3, maybe 4 year old tech and still is ahead of the mobile devices, but we can be pretty sure they will catch it mid gen. PS4 and X1 will probably be reached some time after PS5/X"whatever they call it".

The Wii U processor is 1.2GHz. This processor is way more efficient in clock/performance ration than an ARM, so comparing it without benchmarks would be pointless. The Wii U controller is 480p, not 720p. The Shield isn't just streaming since it play all Android games (of course, most are crap).

Arm processors aren't that powerful for the ghz, and the wii u's processor is dedicated to games, so despite the numbers I'd imagine the wii u is still far better and will be for some time.
The wii u gamepads resolution is fine for the purpose. If they released a higher quality gamepad they only need improve the quality and vividness of the screen.

Currently I find the shield a very tempting product. Not the same category as the Wii U but yet another product to slowly eat at nintendos market.
