Oh, I never buy them, I don't feel it's prudent to spend $20 on them. Or $10. Or waste an evening on them. I don't even bother downloading those free PS+ games, they just clutter my hard drive. I don't really feel that nostalgic for my youth to endure PacMan graphics in 2014. |
So you're commenting from a point of ignorance. Great.
Check out the visuals of indie titles like Outlast and Trine 2. Indie doesn't mean "PacMan" graphics, it's quite simply independent developer who, relatively recently, have been given the ability to self-publish and interact direcly with their consumers. There are a good number of indie titles that rival the AAA games in terms of gameplay, and absolutely destroy AAA titles in terms of innovation.
Yeah, I've been on an indie kick lately myself.

The older reviews aren't as well written, but yeah. It's late so my coherence is fading but for the record, 70-79 for me is a "buy it if it interests you." 80-89 is "buy it unless you don't like the genre." 90-99 is universally good, even if you don't like the genre you should buy it unless you just can't stand the genre. 100 is a f*cking unicorn and you should catch it on sight.
My next indie purchases are the updated Guacamelee! and Scram Kitty I do believe. Heard nothing but good things.

But it's not ignorance. I get a steady stream of those with my PS+ sub. So I guess they do serve a purpose - Sony can claim we are getting free games, when in actuality we get free crap for which I would hate myself had I paid for them directly, which they have audacity to charge $20 for. A bunch of side-scrollers from the 90s, some PacMan crap, and a ton of artsy fartsy mess which most people don't dare admit they hate because they won't be considered cool anymore.
If I wanted to play indie crap, I wouldn't have bought a $400 console. Luckily, there are still enough real games that I'll gladly pay for.
I'm starting to think your sig is hilariously appropriate.
I like indies alot. I feel they offer new experiences at game rental prices.
I can understand people owning PS4's, and X1's being irritated at the big push for indies on both, the reason most upgrade (early adopters) is to experience games with high end graphics not fully possible on previous hardware i.e Infamous SS, and Ryse.
With that said, has anybody on here supported the true indie machine.. the Ouya?
Indie devs drive creativity in the industry. Minecraft is a very good example of a creative indie title that demolished all AAA titles in terms of creativity.
Someone above said that indie titles existing or not existing would have no effect on the industry. When you look at where the fastest growth is coming from, it is from Indie developers. Platforms where idie developers thrive, like Steam, Android, and iOS are all on the rise, whereas the console industry is shrinking fast.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

You do realize that quite a few of those games you mentioned are not indie? And as KLX said, it's not just those two types of games. |
I guess they're not indie in the strict sense of the word. They're all $10-$20 downloadable titles, and they have taken over from the $60 B tier games. Maybe Dynasty warriors 8 is a B-title game? I don't know of any others this gen. MotoGP 14? Where have the new B-tier games gone, the fun action adventure platformers.

There are more of those B-List games, but sadly some overestimate their value (Murdered: Soul Sacrifice, which at $40 would have fared much better). I would say Sniper Elite is one, most JRPGs and similar, most superhero games are not AAA, Disney and other movie tie-ins. (Spiderman recently)
Some, like Dead Island and Metro, started as B, but were successful enough to warrant a budget bump to AAA.
So, there is choice, even for those that despise big budget behemoths.

Not all of them are like that. Some are close to AAA games in terms of gameplay if not budget. Your image of indie games seems very skewed if your only experience is from PS+.
Check out Trine 2, Outlast, Amnesia: The Dark Decent, Torchlight 2 or Gone Home.
