How important do you feel indie games are these days?

Check out the visuals of indie titles like Outlast and Trine 2. Indie doesn't mean "PacMan" graphics, it's quite simply independent developer who, relatively recently, have been given the ability to self-publish and interact direcly with their consumers. There are a good number of indie titles that rival the AAA games in terms of gameplay, and absolutely destroy AAA titles in terms of innovation.

But it's not ignorance. I get a steady stream of those with my PS+ sub. So I guess they do serve a purpose - Sony can claim we are getting free games, when in actuality we get free crap for which I would hate myself had I paid for them directly, which they have audacity to charge $20 for. A bunch of side-scrollers from the 90s, some PacMan crap, and a ton of artsy fartsy mess which most people don't dare admit they hate because they won't be considered cool anymore.

If I wanted to play indie crap, I wouldn't have bought a $400 console. Luckily, there are still enough real games that I'll gladly pay for.

Not all of them are like that. Some are close to AAA games in terms of gameplay if not budget. Your image of indie games seems very skewed if your only experience is from PS+.
