Forums - Nintendo - Why the lack of hype for....just about any game on wii?

@ Words of Wisdom: Then what the heck are you saying, bro? Because nobody else in this thread seems to have a clue, other than what we can infer.

Niche games will never get the same level of hype as a non-niche game as by definition it has a smaller target audience. Some of my favorite franchises like Fire Emblem and Super Robot Wars have a fixed level of hype because their target market segments are not as broad as those of something like Wii Sports.

However, on a relative level, niche games can be very well hyped. People who like sRPGs and Fire Emblem were very excited for Radiant Dawn however I'd guess that a majority of Wii owners probably weren't.

Essentially, complaining about the lack of hype for a niche game is self-defeating and complaining about the hype levels of a lineup of niche games (and unproven IPs/developers) is also pointless.

Now you're talking sense instead of talking smack. Thank you.

And me and Kasz are still gonna get stoked about niche titles. ;)

I completly endores everything that WordsofWisdom has said in this thread, and agree to the fullest extent.

If a title doesn't sell well on the Wii it's "niche". I wish that I could use that excuse everytime a PS3 game didn't sell.

Then, all the blame is put on the PS3 or 360 with comments like GGE (I'm paraphrasing) [Sony was supposed to be the market leader, and developers haven't had time to plan games on the wii because they were caught off guard by it's success]. Which is another bs excuse, but the good thing about that one, is that in about six to ten months, that excuse will be dead, because it would have been out for two years, and the whole "caught off guard thing" will be yesterday's news.

And finally, the most blame really belongs to the fanboys. They see a game, they hype it out of this world, say it will sell good, etc. Then when the game doesn't do that, they fall back on "it's a niche title.". Case-in-point, NiGHTS. There was a thread on this game a few months back, and a few users posted that they expected the game to sell a million, one even guessed a million and a half. And now the game has sold really low (under 200k right?), it's now a "Niche" title.

If Wii fanboys would spend half of the time they do pointing the finger at every thing, or stopped hyping every third-party game that will break this streak of badness, and spent that time actually reading about games, and making informed decisions on what games actually will be good, they wouldn't have to go around and look dumb when games don't meet their expectations.

Interesting, what's the one third-party game that no one thinks should have been a big seller? -- Carnival Games.

What's the one third-party game that showed people playing the game and having fun in their ads (at least in North America)? -- Carnival Games.

Connection -- I think so.

Jeese, people are douches. Nothing can be discussed politely or intelligently without trying to make crass generalizations, or slamming one side of the console aisle or the other.

As for the lack of hype -- at least in North America -- the magazines and the TV shows are catering to the target demographic. That is the more traditional player (aka "hardcore") -- male, 15-24, near limitedless game-playing time.

That fits many more PS3 and Xbox 360 players than it does Wii players.

For example, in watching the new X-Play, you would never realize that the Wii was a major console, let alone the biggest seller in 2007.

Most of these games like Monster Lab, Deadly Creatures and others just don't sound like anything more than niche titles. I've never understood why people get so excited about these fringe titles comming to the Wii.

Desperation. Wii fans are starved for quality 3rd party support that doesn't come in the form of PS2 ports or one-off games like Zack and Wiki.

you guys got it

God Dmeister, do you honestly try this hard to be cluessless to what is going on in the thread or is thread skimming your specialty?

I never blamed the PS3 or 360 for anything that has ever befallen the Wii. The Wii is a big boy and can take responsability for itself.

I've never used the term "Niche" as a justification for any Wii game, I've only ever used it as an insult for non-mass appeal shovelware that seems to be the standard fare for it.

And no DMeisterJ, "Niche" is not the excuse used by PS3 gamers when a game flops, "Casual" is (LAIR).

To follow up, the Wii gets no third party hype because there are no third party games comming out that are really worth caring about. With Nintendo saying they're holding back info longer too, its unlikely we'll know about any developments either until the games are less than six months away.

Who knows if more support is comming. God knows I want more, but I'm not crying over the fact that the Wii has exclusive support of the number one developer World Wide.

If third party developers won't step up to the plate, then Nintendo will just have to invest in more 1st and 2nd party titles to fill in the void. Will that upset developers even more, yeah, but so what, if they're not going to support this generation's PS2 then its clearly not sinking the Wii. And if they can do just fine on the 360 and PS3, then everyone wins.

@ GGE

You've never said that devs were putting all of thier eggs in the PS3s basket, and were caught off guard by the Wii's success?

I am not even going to go any further than saying that's a lie. And I'm done since you will argue till you're blue in the face and say you didn't.
