Forums - Gaming - I do miss backward compatibility

I actually doubt it, the GPU in the PS4 (equivalent to a 7870) has trouble with emulating PS2 games at times, let alone PS3 games. Of course, the CPU would still be doing the most heavy work in emulating either the CPU or the GPU I would expect, and the Jaguar can't come close to handeling the amount of tasks needed to emulate RSX right now.

I highly doubt that an HD 7870 is troublesome for emulating PS2 games ...

Not quite PS2 games at stock resolution, but increasing the native resolution makes some games drop a lot in frame rate. Also, in some games you sill see some lag, no matter what GPU you use.

And it isn't troublesome all the time, just for a few games.

This.

Too much trouble, it costs them less and easier to manage just having PS3/PS2/PS1 games on PSnow as game rentals.

I am certain that when the service comes into its own they will have free rentals there too for PS+ members and the pricing will be a lot better for non free stuff. At the end of the day, that $100 you are willing to spend for a BC add on, which excludes what you will also be spending for the games, you could just spend it renting the games from PSnow if BC means that much to you.

Wii U doesn't have any games I want to play besides Bayonetta 2.

Maybe you will like the games after you play them.

I am not going to lie -  Super Mario 3D World turned me off big time. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were my favorite games last gen and to see 3D World made me ignore the Wii U. I felt like giving it a chance til I saw the new Zelda and said I'm done with Nintendo. Sucks too cause the Wii was my favorite console last gen.

Yes, play whatever you love. Although, maybe you should give some Wii u games a chance some time on a demo unit or finding someone with a Wii U. I don't want you missing out on games you would have otherwise enjoyed.

Even at higher resolutions it still doesn't struggle a whole lot ... What's making it hard is the fact that it will be CPU limited in a lot of scenarios so getting a more powerful GPU isn't exactly the ideal solution. What a PS2 emulator would mostly depend on from GPUs is a higher bandwidth seeing as how the 4MB embedded memory wasn't a slouch clocking in at 48 GB/s which would indicate that it was a beast at the time for fast read/writes to the framebuffer and it's faster than the RSX in this respect also.

Good time to own Nintendo consoles and not be judgmental over graphic styles.

Too bad, TC.

My problem with not backwards compatibility is that devs are using the lack of it to remake some games that could easily be played with backwards compatibility.

Can't get over Mario 3D World and the new Zelda art style as hard as I have tried. And before you say I am an anti-Nintendo fanboy: Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were my favorite games last gen and Zelda: Ocarina of Time is my favorite game of all time.

I do wish the companies would do something to lessen the blow... Like I get it, backwards compatibility is too much work and once the ps4/x1 has enough games (usually by the end of the second year), the BC cares go way down cause people are too busy playing the new games but with that being said, they should at least give a discount or something to the owners when they do have a way of playing those old games like PSNow and xbox equivalent but oh well... What can ya do...

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I never understand why people make a big deal about backwards compatibility. Its a feature that's barely used.
