Forums - Sony - Video:Excuses Why PS4 Is Selling Is Irrelevant

PS4 in four weeks of June after launch: 412,761
Wii in four weeks of June after launch: 1,027,971
360 in four weeks of June after launch: 319,063
PS3 in four weeks of June after launch: 239,757

PS4 is performing more like 360 or PS3 than Wii by a large margin, and 360 didn't really get started properly until a year after launch, and PS3 took even longer. The PS4 isn't selling nearly as well as people think - it was doing very well around launch, but despite popular belief, it's not doing nearly as well now as strong consoles have in the past.

The fact that XBO and Wii U are selling even worse, and that the PSV is selling poorly and the 3DS isn't doing much better than the PS4, demonstrates how anaemic the video game industry is right now.

So I have to ask what home consoles outside of the Wii have done better? Because if there are lot more that did better then you could make the case that it is really not doing well. If not them that would mean that the Wii was an anamoly....and if that leaves the PS4 doing better than pretty much everything else wouldn't that mean it is doing very well?

The absence of evidence is NOT the evidence of absence...

Anaemic? Sweet Jesus people. Both PS4 and X1 have vastly outsold their predecessors during the same time period. It's the summer right after a new launch cycle. Sales are gonna be slow. They always are during summer (and yet, PS4 is outselling both PS3 and 360 during their respective first summers by FAR). Sales will pick up this fall/Christmas as they always do, then they'll dip again next summer. As they ALWAYS do. As far as software goes, April/June saw the industry as a whole make massive gains.

You folks are ridiculous. Honestly, it's impossible for some of you to see or make sense. Anaemic. What a joke.

I don't get whats happenning now... why are some people comparing the PS4 sales to that of the wii? Why not compare it to the PS3 or the PS2? Why compare a $400 console to what was at the time a $250 console?

Is this the new low that certain posters have sunk to now? Its starnge, the PS4 is not doing well even though its selling better than the PS3 and PS2 did in the same period of time, better than what any current generation console has managed to do... but yet, its not doing well and everyone is just doing badly? Wow. Guess some people will say anything.

Ironic how a thread about how excuses for PS4's good sales are irrelevant has turned into a thread about making excuses for PS4 not selling as well as the Wii...

Protip: Your excuses are irrelevant ;)

Because some people are ridiculous and don't understand how console cycles work. Summer is a slow season, period. And yet, PS4 is currently selling far more it's first summer than PS3, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. It's having the best first summer ever. But people don't wanna do that. They want to compare a brand new console without a any real must-haves (par for the course first year) with console sales from, say 2010 or 2012, when there was a huge catalog of titles available. Some people are CONVINCED the next generation of consoles need to sell 800k a week, and that's absolutely insane.

And comparing it to the Wii is folly. The Wii was an anomaly.

Protip: the Wii was a phenomenon, not the norm. It roped in tons of casuals and people who would never buy a console otherwise (moms, grandmas, grandpas, retirement homes) who moved on to mobile gaming and never looked back. Period. Comparing the two is useless. The console industry is not drying up (a,laughable idea), its simply returning to normal.

But the PS4 isn't really selling super well...? Its relatively good, but its more that XBO/Wii U are selling badly, and I think that the argument is that PS4 doesn't deserve to be selling so well relative to the others.

The fact that the PS4 is no longer killing it in the sales charts sort of destroys the whole video >.> (it also sounds like the guy who made it is a major fanboy...)

Sounds like excuses. Also what kind of fanboy does he sound like, because BrokenGamez is a PC gamer. He only buys exclusives on console. Perhaps he sounds like a fanboy to you because you disagree with him?

Whenever someone calls him out for being biased for Sony he always runs to the PC gamer label. Its as clear as day he likes Sony over the other two which is why is he probably made this video. The reasons why the PS4 is selling the way it doesn't really matter because that's just the way its selling and that is the reality of the situiton.

Yeah, its so strange to see a console sell 100mil...that has never happened before. Well if you ignored the fact that it has happened through each of the last three generations...

Once again, I just find it funny how a thread about how irrelevant excuses are has turned into a thread full of excuses...

I will repeat when I said that the PS4 was selling well, but its sales are nothing to brag about...

PS: I would like to see your source with PS2's first summer's sales

EDIT: I would also like to point out that we don't have official NPD numbers for June yet, and given VGC's track record, they could be anywhere...

I( agree with the guy in the clip completely. Sony relies on future promises, and they have always delivered so far.

What he misses though, is that the console that sells best, also changes the industry. The Wii introduced traditional non-gamers to the industry, opening up for MS and Sony to flirt with that group aswell. This generation, traditional gaming consoles are selling better, which will affect the industry again.

Should the industry work towards broadening its base or focusing on the ones that are dedicated to console gaming? That is the really interesting question for me.

Unfortunately, we don't have solid numbers for the consoles before that for any single month, but the PS2 was selling quite strongly (I've at least found evidence that, in the US alone, PS2 was selling over 250,000 units a month in the early months of 2001). The point, though, is that people didn't consider the PS3 or Xbox 360 to be selling all that well at this point in their lives, and the PS4 isn't doing that much better in terms of weekly sales. Sales around launch are irrelevant - those are driven by short-term hype. Even Sony itself noted that PS3 was selling poorly in 2007 (source).
