Kinda strange people are comparing LTD software totals up to 2014 on "vgchartz" but when it comes to hardware people are using shipment announcement from Nov 2013 and ignoring the same website for HW. Talk about moving the goal post to fit your agenda.

We won't know the exact amount of ps3s shipped to this point but we know it is very undertracked from the shimpents Sony have just given.Over 100 million ps3s,ps4s and vitas shipped to date.Lets say 9 million ps4s shipped, same for vita that leaves you with the rest being ps3s.So over 100 million can be anything from 101 to 120 million. We can assume all day, lets just go by Vgchartz numbers for now that the ps3 is still ahead.

why should we go with vgz numbers, if they are just estimates and we got official numbers?

july 22 we will get new xbox 360 shipment numbers. august will be new ps numbers

this "from 100.001 million to 120 million" ist just dumb

xbox 360 is also at "over" 84m. that doenst mean its at 90m

i always use the most reliable figures.

for hardware we got offical shipment numbers

for overall lifetime platform software, we dont have anything similar. (just from nintendo)

i dont use them. op is using them. i just take them with a grain of salt and being maybe 10% off.

but as bigger the gap is, the less important is the accuracy for being right on frist or second place.

glad ps3 and x360 software isnst close.

360 will probably end up 1st in software and keep 2nd in hardware. Not a bad result :).

How is the 360 second in hardware?

The moment anyone can show me any shipment report placing PS3 ahead of 360, I will concede to that. I have said for the last 18 months that the 360 numbers are way of (PS3 numbers aswell, just not as much). We saw some major adjustments a few weeks back, but they weren´t nearly enough regarding 360. So, no, the 360 never was in 3rd place and by the looks of it never will end up there.

Thanks to derailing that thread from software sales to hardware sales ;)

Added a chart with the development of the software gaps from 2009 to mid 2014:

Also added some charts of the software shares (only home consoles, only handhelds and both together).

"2009 A" = first half of 2009, "2009 B" = second half of 2009... all data is based on the software totals (in the middle and at the end of each year) of the weekly VGC data:

  • Nintendo's software share (home consoles) sank from 47% in 2009 to 16.5% in the first half of 2014.
  • Sony's software share (home consoles) rose from 25% in 2009 to 49% in the first half of 2014.
  • Microsoft's software share (home consoles) rose from 28% in 2009 to 41% in 2012, then sank to 34.5%.
  • Nintendo's software share (handhelds) stayed between 72% and 81%, now it's 75%.
  • Sony's software share (handhelds) stayed between 18% and 29%, now it's 25%.
  • Nintendo's software share (total) sank from 59% in 2009 to 30% in the first half of 2014.
  • Sony's software share (total) rose from 24% in 2009 to 44% in the first half of 2014.
  • Microsoft's software share (total) rose from 18% in 2009 to 26% in the first half of 2014.
