Forums - Nintendo - Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker: Where Nintendo Falls Short

Captain Toad might be a fun game, but Nintendo could do so much more with it in my opinion. They could really expand the idea into a full on adventure, treasure hunting game rather than a set of mini-games that appears more appropriate to Mario Party or Nintendoland. What I have in mind is something like a mixture of Uncharted and PC adventure games. I don't want it to be a cinematic action game like Uncharted but there would be action sequences like the ones they showed for the game, but there would also be puzzle solving and using items to advance like in something like The Longest Journey or Riven. It wouldn't be as extreme as those two either where in The Longest Journey some of the item based puzzles were extremely obscure and in Riven where the puzzles are just really difficult at times. What I am saying, though, is that Nintendo should expand the scope of the game and the mechanics of the game into a real adventure game. To me, it really shows off Nintendo's mini-game mindset in regards to some of their games.

I remember playing this Indiana Jones game as a kid, if you skip to about 9 minutes in you can see the kind of thing I'm talking about. Obviously, the interface and all that would be radically different for a Nintendo game, but I think using the diary, finding clues, and using items in the environment as well as the action parts like in the actual game could all combine into a really compelling adventure game from Nintendo.

Have you played Super Mario 3D World?

I disagree. A game with Toad can never bee a full game with a story cause Toad is such an uninteresting character.

This is what we've seen of this game. You play on small square pieces of land. That's what I'm talking about, a more complete 3d world to start off with rather than these small islands.

He is, but maybe that's because he hasn't been in a game with a good story, or been the focus of a game like this?

I feel this thread is a poke at short people.

Isn't that what this game is supposed to be? An expansion on the Toad levels in 3D world. What I'm saying is go all out with it, expand the concept into a more complete and compelling title.

We'll both probably get a lot of hate from people crying, "As long as it's fun, who cares???" but I agree with you. Scope and depth are exactly what Nintendo games have been lacking. They used to take an idea and really run with it, but now it's all about condensing one idea into a simple, straightforward experience. It's like they just stopped caring to take the time to craft a full game, because everyone was just buying New Super Mario Bros. games anyway.

This is a great example of something that could have been so much more. Instead it's a mini game disguised as a retail game.

Well if you havent played the game, then you wont know why the stuff you suggested wouldnt work. Each level is like a rubiks cube, you need to twist and turn the world aroung to get to your goal.

I would rather they did what you suggested and make a new game though:)
