Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo's Problem -- There Simply Isn't Room For 3 Consoles

Not really. There is nothing outdated about fun.

The term "fun" is subjective. I agree with you and would say that many Nintendo games are fun. Sadly, "fun" is no longer enough in this industry for a console maker. (This is about sales, not my own opinions)

1) Wii U is underpowered for the current gen (Outdated)

2) Nintendo's main genre is platformer. This is the most basic genre in gaming. In a time where people want big budget, cut-scene filled games, this won't do. It's fine for $15 indies but not $50 - $60 retail games.

3) Almost none of Nintendo's IP's have voice acting or movie-like scenes. Again, this is fine if you like it but it's a bit "old" feeling.

4) I don't feel as though Nintendo is "only for kids" but some do feel this way. The Amiibo line certainly isn't going to help either. With that said, there is no denying that Nintendo is easily the most child friendly console maker. This market for the most part has been stolen by children wanting iPhones and tablets instead. Kids are also growing up faster and everyone wants to be "16 and cool". This means, 12 year olds now play COD and not Mario. Nintendo is now outdated and not cool. It's an image problem really.

1) Yet, some of their games look better than some PS4 and XB1 games. Its not always about raw power. Art direction is just as important.

2) NSMBWii sold 25 million copies.....yeah.

3) Better to have no voices than terrible ones.

4) It is mainly for kids. That doesnt mean that we cant enjoy them though. Pixars movies are mainly aimed at kids...

Perfect. This is exactly why Microsoft should leave.

If all the hardcore fans buy a PS4 like they are doing, then there is no need for a similar system like the XB1. At least the WiiU offers something different. Take a look back in time and you'll see that two similar consoles never sold well (except last gen). PS1 & N64 were polar opposites as were the SNES and Genesis.

It's about time Microsoft left, I think the fans have spoken after so much outrage over DRM, forced Kinect/spying, 720p, milking Halo, etc.

If anything in the gaming industry is tired and outdated it's the FPS genre.

The FPS genre is personally one of my least favorites. With that said, according to sales, FPS's are still very much alive and current.

The Amiibo line certainly isn't going to help? Where do you get these ideas? And why is everyone acting as though Nintendo are in third place? Check your global numbers people. MS was third last generation and they will likely be third in this generation so let's all have this conversation again after SSB and Zelda launch in addition to the Amiibo line.

True 3 means one will always be the runt of the litter. By the way ninty does not need its own hardware to make great games, sooner or later they and their fans will have to accept and embrace that.

We know that, we also prefer Nintendo hardware and innovation that will be used in high budget games (unlike move and kinnect) over better graphics.

People who want the oligopoly that is Video Games to become a monopoly are ignorant of how economics work. The end result of that would be screwing consumers. So everybody better hope all three competitors stay in the game, and more join, because competitive markets are consumer-friendly markets.

I personally think we can do without M$ anti consumer stance in the industry and Sony's lack of innovation and instead goes with a "assimilate what's popular" business practice. But they both have an important role in the industry. That being said, I personally don't want to play with a dual shock or xbox controller for the rest of my gaming life.

I could just as well make the argument that there is only room for ONE console; Atari used to dominate, then Nintendo with NES and then Sony with PS1 & 2. Thats 4 generations when ONE console has dominated the market, but since we still have Nintendo and MS (and HAD Sega) making consoles that claim isn't true.

Nintendo's problem is that they need an appealing and unique console. Case in point; NES and Wii. Both were unique when they were released and had extremely compelling SW to show off the systems; Mario and Wii Sports. SNES wasn't all that different from Sega and neither were GameCube from PS2 and Xbox. The anomaly is N64 which introduced proper 3D games but were still beaten by Sonys PS1. The problem with Wii U is that it's not unique enough; iPads are everywhere now so that touchscreen thing isn't all that cool any more. And they don't have the SW to show case the system.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I disagree with the op. 3 well balanced systems with broad appeal to a maturing gamer audience can work. Even if the over all console market is less than 200 million 3 systems all with market share in the 30s or high 20% range is viable. Nintendo's problem is too much of the mature gamer market sees Nintendo consoles as being for kids and casuals. They don't see the exclusive mature game offerings as being compelling enough to justify buying, and the multiplat titles at least for this and last gen are all inferior looking because the systems have been hopelessly underpowered.

It's hard to come up with a unique idea every single time though, those ideas just don't grow on trees.

And the NES, really it dominated because it had every third party game imaginable whereas the Sega Master System, being locked out of third party contracts had ... Sega games only (kinda bizarre how Nintendo has sort of inadvertantly become Sega from the Master System days).

Yeah, Nintendos buisness practises during the NES and SNES were questionable to say the least...
