Forums - Gaming - Samsung 'to launch virtual reality headset' in September

Well there goes Sony's grip on the casual market with Morpheus.  I'm guessing Sony's headset is gonna be way more expensive since it has to run high end games and the casual audience is just gonna buy Samsung's headset if its way cheaper.

I think VR will only attract hardcore gamers

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Maybe it's too early to tell, but if Samsung joins VR alongside Sony and Facebook, said technology might receive more support from developers and increase popularity among users. But will it attract gamers or phone users?

VR is not a casual geared device even if the price is right. AR is a lot more promising for the mainstream audience, Wearables and Google Glass and the like

I see VR being more attractive to casuals.  VR seems way more, for lack of a better word, futuristic and I can see a lot of people buying it just cause they're so curious about it and want to give it a try.  AR is something that's been done for years, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a number of mobile games that use it, but idk if they do.

I thought 'strap a phone to your head' was more or less a joke

I guess I was wrong...

A screen for your phone that works in day light, and one that works in the dark with lowest possible persistance can't be the same, can it?

Why?
AR and Wearables are the future of the "mobile" tech industry,
Nobody is gonna a where a headset, unless they are a gaming enthusiast, and well, good luck Samsung.

it could see use with virtual experience, like the VR opera Senza Peso or VR documentaries like Titans of Space - the S5 hardware should be able to display those

that said I hope Samsung will allow this to be used as a VR screen for the PC (so much more potential content), but I doubt it a lot

Funny how people on this site are pretty down on Samsung on getting into VR.

A number of others on this site have been falling all over themselves about Morpheus and and Oculus with very few titles even confirmed using the technology.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Casuals hate putting things on their head, especially if they can't use it whereever they want. The vivid immersion that it provides is completely useless to people who play mobile or facebook games. Sure its spectacle but that isn't going to drive it to become a full blown fad. Especially when VR has failed thus far even in the gaming industry, arguably the most to gain from it.

VR has been done longer than AR, and like Touch, it will take a while to get a long. But with the fad of Selfies its not that far removed.

The problem is your looking at this through the lens of games, and gaming might have become mainstream, but gaming as a hobby, the enthusiasts, are not. Console are still a luxury device.

Actual AR, not simply accelerometers and the like, will take a while to catch on, or probably be supplanted by Wearables, Glass has a lot more potential for mainstream then Orpheus, Rift, or Samsung's thing, simple curiosity is and never have been enough to drive something becoming mainstream.

Wiimote, cheap and easy

Touch, cheap, easy avaliable

The only people who buy something because its futuristic are the enthusiasts and the hardcore

Touch was invented back in 1948, but didn't become popular till this decade.
