If I were a betting man, I would bet that Nintendo doesn't have the infrastructure to stream Virtual Console games to 50 million 3DS owners around the world. Some sort of cross-buy plan, on the other hand, does sound like something they would do in time. They've been talking a lot about unifying their home and portable platforms lately. And just a few weeks ago, we got this tidbit:

A subscription service is coming to Nintendo without a doubt. It has worked too well for MS and especially Sony for them to ignore. Nintendo also has the greatest back catalog to exploit. I'm pretty sure they are going to follow the Sony model and introduce the free game subscription to Wii U, then transfer it to their next home console which will be more powerful but hide the cost in a paid online/free old game model. It just makes too much sense.

What are you people talking about? It's not paying for online multiplayer.

You know on PS+ how you get free games and you download them to play them, but when your subscription to PS+ runs out you no longer have access to them? Like that, except you'd have access to all the games on the virtual console, you'd just download them. Like you said, I also doubt that Nintendo can stream games to the 3DS effectively.

So, every time you boot up a game, it has to check your account?

At least you don't have to be online the whole time, I guess.

Yea there would have to be some kind of DRM obviously. It's not like it takes an hour for it to check or something so who cares.

Well I would start by saying that I care, since my 3DS can only connect to the internet at my house or at a couple of friends' houses. In a car, plane, bus, train, park, waiting room, theater, hotel -- no Virtual Console for you!

You don't have to be online to play the free PS+ games either.
