It doesn't matter about exposure, your wanting of bayonetta is more of a marketing thing than a nintendo history game which is SSB. Pacman/Sonic/Megaman are enough for third parties. They symbolize the gaming industry, Bayonetta has no reference wats so ever.

If they added bayonetta, they would of put other characters way beford her. Who? Bomberman is an example. Oh Yeah how about Geno? He's one of the most requested characters of all time for SSB (after Sonic/Megaman/Ridley) yet he isnt in. Bayonetta is cool and all but this isnt PSASBR. They aren't going to add just anyone, and it seems if they do add her in the game it defeats the point of SSB.

Common sense dictates you don't sell between 1 and 12 million copies without some sort of exposure.  Just because fanboys weren't whining about it doesn't mean the games weren't well promoted.
