I'm not saying that there's anything bad about PSN downloadable games or anything. It's just that.. Nobody is dropping hundreds of dollars of cash to play a downloadable Indie game. A free to play game is in the same boat. Kresnik, be honest, would you buy a brand new $400 dollar PS4 specifically for a free to play game? Even if you look at the sales each week, you will see that nobody is buying a system for a free to play game.

Nobody bought the system for Untold Legends either.  I was comparing like for like.  An SOE game for an SOE game.

(And to be honest, yeah.  I'm more likely to buy a PS4 because of Planetside 2 than I was to buy a PS3 for Untold Legends.  Planetside 2 looks like a legitimately good game and my PC couldn't run it in a month of Sundays)

I'm still more partial to the PS3's first year but that's just because it's full of the kind of niche stuff that just isn't being made by anyone anymore, period (Ratchet; Heavenly Sword; Folklore etc.)

Also, it's worth pointing out that in your list in the OP:

- 6 of the PS3 games you listed are developed by Sony-owned studios.

- 7 of the PS4 games you listed are developed by Sony-owned studios.

So if anything, their in-house content seems to have gotten better.  It's the lack of partnerships with outside studios that's hurting the exclusives lineup (but Sony are partnering with outside studios, they're just releasing them as downloadable/F2P titles.  Because times have changed.  Hence my point).

I personally don't consider ~2 million copies sold niche. And it's also still being made by people.

Sony needs to support the PlayStation Vita!!!

It hasn't sold close to 2m copies for 5 years.  We'll have to see where it's at some time in about another 3 years when they get around to making a brand new, full-length game.

I was talking about Tools of Destruction, as that was the game that launched in the PS3s first year and is mentioned in the OP.

You mean the one that was bundled?  Not the best example.

But fine.  Perhaps "niche" was the wrong word.

"The middle of gaming that is slowly dying and is only going to accelerate with a new generation of consoles"

Is the phrase I meant.

I mean yes, you get stuff like Remember Me or Murdered Soul Suspect which can still pass for a "less than AAA but bigger than indie" game, but these are going to be fewer and further between as time goes on.  As evidenced by the PS4's first year titles compared to the PS3's.

Hence the "niche" labelling as it's a small but dedicated audience that these kinds of things still cater to.

That was the point I was getting at.  Unless you think otherwise?

I didn't know it was bundled. Didn't really care about sales'n'stuff back in 08

And for your second statement, I agree. "2,5 A" games are dying.

Does anybody remember back in 2006, 07 and early 08 when ps3 was NOTORIOUS for having "NO GAEMS"? (Shout out to Badgenome!) Well let's take a look at how the PlayStation 4 is doing exclusive-wise compared to what the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 did by the end of their first full years exclusive-wise.

PS2:

2000 = Fantavision, NFL Gameday 2001, NCAA Final Four 01, NCAA Gamebreaker 01

01 = ATV Off Road Fury, NBA Shootout 2001, Dark Cloud, Cool Boarders 2001, Twisted Metal Black, Gran Turismo 3: A-spec, Extermination, ICO, Formula 1 2001, Okage: Shadow King, Kinetica, NCAA Final Four 02, Frequency, NFL Gameday 02, Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

Total PS2 Exclusives = 19 Exclusives

PS3:

06 = Resistance Fall Of Man, Genji: Days Of The Blade, NBA 07, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom

07 = Formula 1: Championship Edition, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, NBA 08, Folklore, Eye Of Judgement, Ratchet & Clank: Tools Of Destruction, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

Total PS3 Exclusives = 14 Exclusives

PS4:

2013 = Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack

2014 = Infamous: Second Son, MLB 14: The Show, Driveclub, Little Big Planet 3, BloodBorne

Total PS4 Exclusives = 7 Exclusives

Read it & wheep!

WTF is going on at Sony? You have all these studios but where are the games?!? It's like seeing a big muscle bound dude who lifts weights but doesn't know how to fight. All that buffness for no reason..

..sh!t is ridiculous!

Why cant you just rekindle that flame that made PS fans become fans in the 1st place?

Whatever..

So what's going on with Sony? Do you think Sony needs more studios? Am i just losing my mind and being a negative nancy? or could i be on to something here?

Let me know in the comments below

I cracked your code dude!!!.. your subliminal message was "Sony should buy Capcom"..

lol.. i love this thread.  Sony doesn't need more studios.. they got quality studios that can crank out a bunch of different IPs.  Not everything is going to be a hit, but not every game is the same either.  which i don't mind, because even among those "mid-tier" games, you find worthwhile gems.  find me a game like puppeteer, lbp, starhawk, or tokyo jungle on any other platform.  sure some of this stuff ain't for everybody, but that's not the point of Sony developing them..  Not every title needs to sell 1-5 mil to be profitable... otherwise, expect even longer for these studios to release a game.  Some of those games probably don't cost that much to create in the first place.  Regardless, you always get diversity in the end with Sony.. something for every kind of gamer.  furthermore, how the ps4's strategy is coming along,  it's fine. you'll still see some obscure mid tier game(s) that will fill a niche; but at the same time, you'll still get your AAA, you get some awesome indie exclusives, and you get some great f2p games.  To add, 2nd & 3rd party exclusives and the best system to play the multiplats, Sony is doing just fine in the games department.

The only knock on Sony is their advertising strategy... just need to let people know the games that are/will be available and everything is gravy.

So don't sweat it that you don't see tons of exclusives AAAs at the moment... they're coming, and soon you'll have more great and good games than you'll ever have time to play through.

Man.. I hate it when your girl has to leave my place to come back to you..

I would say its a strategic reason. Sony has a lot of studios but are just keeping things underwrap. You also have to think that Sony released 3 PS3 games the same year as the PS4's release which takes a lot of resources. That is The Last of Us, Puppeteer, and Gran Turismo 6. That is from 3 seperate studios and those working on titles yet to show or release are intentionally taking their time.

I'm never going to complain about sony getting more studios, but I feel that MS is in the most desperate need of some. Maybe they'll buy crytek...

Sony is struggling financially and Yoshida already said to expect less AAA games on ps4. Yoshida is happy with the indie games, so expect those to be the focus of the console moving forward.

He was talking about the industry as a whole...

Sony is part of said industry. PR speak.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.
