Forums - Sony - Has Sony abandoned Japan?

Japanese have become mobile/handheld gamers. No consoles is doing well there.

Japanese games always come late to Sony consoles, look at the tales games and the Persona games, especially Persona... it always comes when the Gen ends... P5 is coming to PS3 next year... The PS4 will have its fare share of JRPGS and Japanese titles just like the PS3 did, it will just take time, and yes this launch was more focused on a world wide scale instead of a Japanese launch, but even then some Japanese games did came out for the PS4: Yakuza Isshin, Dynasty warriors 8 (i think its the 8 correct me if im wrong), Final Fantasy 14 a real reborn and now we are getting Guilty Gear Xrd.

come on people... is this your first gen with Sony? they ALWAYS take time to build up a library of games....

They prioritized the west this time, and looking at the WiiU it was the right choice. If a 19 month old console with several titles that appeal to the Japanese market can only sell 11k a week, then obviously its a market not worth the effort.

I expect the PS4 will improve over time once MGS5, FF15, Tales of, Bloodborne etc release, but in the mean time West > Japan for Sony.

Part of the problem is that Japan has different tastes than the West, but the market isn't big enough to justify an HD console development budget.

Just another reason why those games get pushed to handhelds and now mobile.

THIS, i forgot to also say that whether the Japanese abandoned Sony because Sony abandoned them first being truth or not, is now out of the question because in reality even with games the consoles just dont sell well...  so focusing on a more "western" release was a better idea.

Perhaps I'm ignorant, or just have a really bad memory, but what first party japanese games did they use to make?

According to the wiki, SCEJ made more games for ps3 than ps2 and ps1 combined

There's stuff which is not on that list which was published & funded by Sony but wasn't developed by Japan Studio, like Parappa the Rapper; Alundra; Wild ARMs; Boku no Natsuyasumi or Ore no Shikabane.  I wouldn't exactly call them first party games but they're the kind of stuff we're unlikely to see on PS4.

I think OP is romanticizing the past a little, but I do think that it's unlikely we're going to see such mid-tier output from Sony on the PS4.  They're barely putting it out for Vita which is a much more viable place.

Kind of.

Nobody can blame them though. Wii U isn't doing much better. Look at Mario Kart, normally a very big game for Nintendo in Japan, Wii U sold under 20K there the week it released.

PS4 will do fine there, just not at first.

We'll just have to wait for TGS.

Totally untrue, first, PS3 hadnt more Sony Japan support, at the contrary since Japan Studios were in very bad shape, second, its not clever to judge that when Sony Japan is getting better ans didnt announce Their game, except Bloodborne , which is already more than PS3 from Sony

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

They're just late with quality exclusives that appeal to the common Japanese gamer. PS4 doesn't have the Japanese blockbusters yet like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Kingdom Hearts, One Piece, Hot Shots Golf, Dragon's Dogma, Tales of game, Souls game, the popular JRPGS, etc.

When these games start coming I'm sure the PS4 sales numbers in Japan will improve. Wait til after TGS to conclude whether Sony has abandoned Japan.

Most of those games are third-party. Sony themselves haven't bothered to take the initiative and release good first-party Japanese launch titles to help the PS4. And don't even mention Knack.
