I have three boxes for three different generations of iPad. They're all exactly the same. Same picture, same text, same name same everything. There isn't even a number on each box (1, 2 or 3) to differentiate them. We all like to say that it's the casuals that are into the smartphones and the tablets now and they know perfectly well there's a difference between each generation of those devices.

Except with the iphone you don't need different app stores for every different version.  Every app you pay for on an iphone 4 will work on an iphone 5S 3 gens later.

Because it's properly advertised and the iPhone brand is actually recognizable and is a fashion to know that kind of thing. Also people willinggly spend more $100 for an addicional16gb iPhone5, conscious that the only upgrade is the memory. Casuals are indeed stupid and only follow trends. But advertising products a lot helps too.

I haven't seen an iPhone/iPad advertisement im my life. Anywhere (outside Apple Stores). Yet people still know.

Well, where I live it's even on the news, newspapers and magazines ^^

Point being their software works on all versions so people don't really know what they buying.

The announcement of a new iPhone yearly is like a big phenomenom. I think by the time Wii started to die, they should have released the WiiU right away in the same fashion they announce a new iPhone, me thinks. Not sure it would boost the numbers in a Wii like basis, but people would have been better informed. There were many mistakes with the advertising (or lack of) for WiiU.

Why you keep bringing the iPhone into this? What's that to do with the Wii U? No, people NEED a phone, it doesn't matter if it's an iPhone or Android. Because people need a phone they seek out information on phones and are clued in. 

To call people stupid because they couldn't care less about a console enough to know or investigate the the difference between a Wii and a Wii U is disrespectful.

This may surprise you but some people just don't give a shit.

When I went to Best Buy at the E3 event and asked to pre-order Smash Bros, they asked for 3DS or Wii?

Nobody likes to say WiiU... worst name for game system to date.
