Maybe with that huge pool of superfast RAM, loading screens will be a non-issue. |
sounds hard to believe. i guess we will have to wait and see.

Nope, doesn't work that way. Load times aren't caused or allevated by the RAM speed, they are cause by how long it takes to get data into RAM to begin with. The PS4 could have RAM 10 times faster than it has now but with a 5400rpm HDD with a real world trasnfer speed of 150MB/s, will still take around 35secs to fill up 5GB of RAM. When the data to be processed is in RAM, then that superfast ram starts to play, though not how you probably think it may.
| Imaginedvl said: Honestly with the power of the consoles now I'm not surprised. At the same time, pre-rendered or not, the game experience will not be affected in any way by that. If you look at Metal Gear Solid for instance where you can move the camera around or zoom in in few cut scene, this is really not a big game changer and the majority of people does not even know they can do that. Why this seems to be a big deal for few? |
Actually it will.... imagine you are playing a game like say Halo? and its an open world version of the game with character customization. Pre-rendered cutscenes will mean that whatever customizations you have made to your character will never be reflected in the cutscene. You can have your character all decked in some mythical black armour that you spent five days trying to beat a level to get, only to get into a cutscene and be right back to the green amour, then after the cutscene you will see yourself in black. It breaks immersion.

Or you can render the actual character into the pre-rendered scene. Nothing new. Rendering a few high quality characters with a pre-stored light map into a simplified 3D model to cast the correct shadows won't take many resources. Should still leave plenty time to load the next game section.
In engine cut scenes are no guarantee either. I've seen plenty co-op experiences where the co-op partner simply disappears during in engine cut scenes. A bit more jarring than a different color outfit. And even when the correct equipment is used it often ends up sticking through scenery or other characters. Dragon age: origins had some 'hilarious' cut scenes that way, couldn't be more immersion breaking.

Okay, now that make sense. Honnestly I was not thinking about this kind of things. But yah, this is a good advantage to go with engine cuts scenes :)
But yah some bugs may be annoying with engine cut scenes too. I guess it comes with it

You are talking about FF7,8,9 RE1,2,3 tech....PSX era rendering. There is a reason why the moved away from that. The aren't just doing away with pre-rendered "recorded" cutscenes for immersion sake, its also cause of size limitations... those high quality sand textures take up space you know?
Anyways its all good either way, all this tsuff doesn't actually improve load times anyways... they just conceal them. I still think the PS4 should have been made with a PCIE SSD lol.

Maybe I like I like high quality sand textures.

The headline is to gather hits the headline was not how it was stated by ND.
