You really have hopes for this streaming thing. I don't see it being that good at all and I say this as a launch PS4 owner. I've already accepted that I would keep my PS3 for PS1/3 games and use PC emulator for my PS2 games.  I think it's a wasted product TBH. Same as the boring TV shows that are supposed to help sell it

Vita TV pushes vita out of the handheld territory and into the Microconsole territory. While in Japan that may not work, in the U.S this is a huge set up. Competing against the Smartphones in the U.S, no chance, but at 99$ it can hit with the casuals, and completly outspec the competition while being at price parity allready sans (memcard). For anyone new in PS ecosystem its a must buy, and it makes the PS3 completely obsolete. In tandem with a PS4, it allows play from ps1 to ps4 games, and its a lot easier to move then a PC or PS3.

500$ makes PS4 full backwards compatible in contrast 500$ gives you a neat camera on the Xbox One. Vita TV is cheaper than the 2DS, let alone the Wii U, yet its library dwarfs all other consoles, home or handheld this generation.

The only way it'll flop is if Sony doesn't market it correctly. Its also a better entry system then even Nintendo is offering, it could blow  up in the US

The stuff you're saying is all well and good but I think the market for the product already has multiple PS console. Old games aren't advertised anymore so it's only those who already know what old games were good that will be excited about this. Casuals are just going to be confused if they pick the thing up so I just don't see it happening. This is why it flopped in Japan IMO and I don't see the States being different. Perhaps, most damning of all, sony won't advertise it properly so I predict it would be discontinued in maximum 3 years.

It may actually be a bad idea to confuse consumers with yet another PS product. Right now, the PS3,4,and vita are sold in stores. Now there's PSTV

And when they see it on the shelves its going to be the cheapest system on the market. The Performance of the PS4 round the world led to unrealistic expectatings and disappointing Japan sales, why would the Japan be a reasonable gauge to describe how it does in the states? The PSTV is for all intents and purposes a Vita TV, the vita's game ads starting with E3 now list PSTV as console of support as well. The next cheapest thing is the 2DS at 129,

the handheld market is doing well in Japan, but in the US its getting devoured by Smartphones. As a home console thats still easily portable it might not work in japan because of their handheld lifestyle. In US, this doesn't compete with smart phones at all. PSTV + PS4 is the same price as the Xbox One with the Kinect, so its an excellent companion console as well. Hell, its a better deal with the 399 XB1 then the 499 XB1, and Could be sold with the Wii U to give increase access to the PS library.

All Sony has to do is market it correctly, if they put half the effort that the did with the PS4 in the US this could easily become a profitable runaway success.

Exactly, the key here is Sony is making sure Apple TV, Google TV, Amazon Fire HD tv HAS SOME DIRECT COMP.

It is about which OS for the living room gaming will be the prime OS for developers to build games for for the livingroom.. just like microsoft has done for the PC sony is going for the same point of entry being "PLAYSTATION AS A PLATFORM" to be the #1 platform to make games for the living room, the "Playstation TV is much more than just the PSVita with a name change, its the core idea to shift developers to look at playstation as the "go to platform to build games for" the more rooms you can put that game from devedlopers in at the lowest cost in price the more incentive they have.

Playstation TV is a direct challenge to media topset boxes that are like Priced in the $100.00 mark that turns a TV into a smart TV sony just wants that TV to be a "Playstation TV" EVEN IF ITS NOT A sONY MADE TV! lol

This lil box can make it one

turn your existing TV into a "playstation TV"

Vita. Plays 100% of all Vita compatible games and apps.
Vita TV. Plays 99.9% of all Vita compatible games and apps. Can also play physical copies of those said games. Cannot play any other format of games and cannot play anything the Vita cannot play.

It can play Vita programs and only Vita programs. Makes it a Vita, not another device.

I'm not sure.

If it was still called the Vita TV then it definitely should, but with a new name maybe not. I doubt it will sell much either way though.

well say if sony does indeed bundle it in with a PS4? FOR $499?

and markets turn another tv into a playstation TV! the point being "like THE NAME apple TV" or Google TV and Amazon fire HD tv, how is the sales for those devices going right now?

but say Sony comes in now and promotes the "playstation TV"  V's Look at Amazons Fire TV and now think if playstation does the same which box will sale more?

I think the name change in this case was decided on for good reason, its still a PSVita but to most consumers its going to be seen as a brand new product even though its a PSVita..its not really about the console market in this case its the topset market and i think Sony may be set to disrupt the Niche market of topset boxes like Roku.  with this and repurpose of the PSVita for this market has a real good chance to do such that.

it will be a cheap console for lil kids rooms, and instead of paying $400 to $500 this christmas they can buy a "playstation TV" for $99.00 for a child for christmas this year  if they cannot get a PS4.

Along with The Last Guardian, I'm also surprised (see: disappointed) they didn't really talk about/show off even one major Vita game. It seems the console has basically been reduced to an incredibly expensive peripheral for the PS4.

3DS=DS? :P

The Vita TV can play Vita games and apps that the Vita can use and nothing more.

Can the DS play 3DS games?  No.  The 3DS is a different machine having its own library of games the DS can't play.

Yes, it has the Vita hardware and uses the same OS. The games that don't run on it are just the ones that use hardware it doesn't have, like the screen. And if you think about it, the PSP Go couldn't run all PSP games since it didn't had physical media support. Still, it was a PSP.
