Forums - Nintendo - Best entry level Zelda game?

A Link to the Past and Skyward Sword, just because The Temple of Time in SS is the best dungeon in videogame history.

Quite honestly, I'm yet to find someone who played OoT in recent years and agrees with all the praises. I myself think it's a good game and nothing more.

As for the best starting point, I'm just gonna guess it's A Link to the Past. Though I haven't played more than 3 Zelda games because of lack of proper consoles, so what do I know?

Wind Waker man. Wind Waker.

Since you liked spirit tracks, phantom hourglass seems a good choice.

since you liked more top down, a link between worlds seems a good choice. and you have a 3ds, so there you go.

A Link to the past is a great entry level, then go back to the NES original. It will show you how far from the roots of Zelda, Zelda has drifted away from.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Wind-Waker (Wii and Gamecube version is damn awesome even against the superior remake). Also if you have a 3DS Link Between Worlds may be a surprisingly good intro, its a throw-back to retro Zelda but in many ways brought into the future.

Also if you want interesting dungeons but don't mind a slightly over-linear experience Skyward Sword might be very good for you. Provided you don't hate motion controls.

Wind Waker. You've already played and loved a game with the very same graphics style, and Wind Waker is pure awesome.

Alright, well, to be honest, there are different types of Zelda fans. Some like me love all the Zelda games, some only like 2D, some only 3D, and some are partial to certain art styles. For others, it depends on the level of linearity. Based on what you've said in the OP, I'm going to say either A Link to the Past or A Link Between Worlds would be a good start for you. Don't worry about pirating A Link to the Past, it's not like Nintendo is losing any money since they aren't selling it anywhere, to my knowledge. If you didn't like OOT, that's...surprising, but it's not everyone's favorite. If you're looking for a 3D Zelda and that one didn't work for you, I'd say (assuming you have a Wii) go for Skyward Sword. Twilight Princess is good, but a lot of people felt it was a lot like OOT, but not as good. It's still worth a shot though, if you don't like Skyward Sword. I personally loved it.

If you want me to give you a better recommendation, I need to know your preferences for the following:
1. 3D vs. 2D
2. Retro vs. Modern
3. Linearity vs. Openness
4. How difficult you like your games
5. What sort of art style you find appealing
6. Your opinion on motion controls

I don't think these 6 things matter in this case, because my main problem with Ocarina was its dungeon design. It'd be pure logic to continue with another top-down Zelda game, but it does seem like people try to recommend Wind Waker more. If Skyward Sword doesn't really feel very OOT-ish there's no reason for me not to try it some day as well. I've come far enough to at least definitely scrap TP off the list I guess.

The funny thing about these kind of threads is, that after a while every game in the series in question is mentioned .

Anyway personally I think Ocarina is the best game ever made, so if you didn't like it there's little point in me explaining my suggestions because they're geared towards that game's style naturally.

That said, I will say that if you didn't respond to the dungeons in Ocarina of Time, there's a major chance you aren't going to like any of the other 3D games' dungeons either. Every 3D game afterwards got it's blueprints from Ocarina. People say games like Wind Waker and Skyward Sword are different, which is true in the overworld and some game-mechanics, but once you enter a dungeon they might as well all be in the same game. The only real differences are the items and their usage.

The only fundamentally different games are the 2D games, their dungeons follow their own rules. While Spirit Tracks is 2.5D, it's gameplay style is like a 2D game in the series. If you did like that style, odds are a 2D game fits better for you. Most are on Wii's Virtual Console, and on 3DS's too.

I really don't understand the love for Minish Cap on this site, it's easily one of the worst, so if I may break my own rule and suggest a game; I'd say Link's Awakening. it's brilliant, and to me by far the best 2D game putting it's 'big' SNES brother to shame. Otherwise I agree with those saying A Link Between Worlds is a good substitute, for if you want a new game (LA is 21 years old after all).
