In that case, the PS3 didn't sell as well as the PS2, but do you call 83M (6th best selling system, all time) bad? DS sold 154M, yes, but that was the "PS2 of handhelds", so that's an extremely high standard to be held against. And the GBA had no real competition (N-GAGE? Neo-Geo? Tapwave? All of these bombed completely) so even holding it up to that standard may be a little unfair. PS Vita compared to PSP? That's bad. WiiU compared to Wii? That's bad. But at 43M in year 3 (DS was at 54M when it was 3 years old), I wouldn't consider that "bad". btw, I'm not amongst the people that say "X is selling well because Y is selling less". It was just a gripe I had with some user sentiment on this site and the 3DS was an example to bring it up. A lot of people say XBone isn't selling bad, it's just not selling as good as PS4, yet we have people saying the 3DS is doing bad, while selling higher than a system that's "not selling bad" |
i think when you drop 50% thats bad. yes i would consider PS2 to 3 bad, but damn at least Sony had competition from Ninty and Ms there along with there large screw ups. 3ds might sell half of DS but what is it competing with besides smartphones?
The real money comes from software sales. 3DS software is selling very well. As long as Nintendo continues to support the 3DS, it will be just fine for them.

Thread title: Does Nobody Notice How Badly the 3DS is Doing?
Mmh, nop. I checked the numbers and it isn't selling like Vita. Like it happened almost three years ago, it needs more games. Fortunately, SSB for 3DS is close.
Edit: And I'm pretty sure we will get some good announcemnets for the console on the E3.

I brought up the Wii because in the past you asked me what Nintendo could have done to avoid the Wii U disaster. Back then you pitched the same line of thinking as you just did in this thread for an alternate DS successor. - "No idea what they could have done better, was it even possible to do anything differently?" As for point 3, that refers to new IPs. Something like Brain Training and Nintendogs were on the DS (new IPs), but not what Brain Training and Nintendogs are on the 3DS (sequels). |
yes i and still believe that, the difference is im not constantly putting down both consoles. If someone is doing that all the time they they at least should say what they would have done since it seems they know more than the people in charge at Nintendo. Let me reiterate their are things they could have done better but we were never going to see a Wii and DS repeat and I stand by that. But at least you give some ideas.
Thats fair but its not like their is a gaurantee that would have worked. IMHO Brain Training and Nintendo dogs, worked so well because it tapped into what made the HW so unique. I dont know what Ninty could have done on 3ds that would have done the same, its not like the 3d really adds to actual gameplay.
| NintendoPie said: As of late I've noticed many people shifting focus to the "Battle of the Big Three Home Consoles", but there's a problem brewing in the Handheld's case, seemingly under most people's noses. The 3DS has fallen from it's "glory" days, and fast. There was a time when it did around ~120k weekly, a healthy number. However, now it's yet to even find a baseline; falling from ~85k to ~76k quite quickly with no stop in sight. This is not good at all and paints an ugly picture for the future of the depressing state of the little Handheld that could. What's the problem here? I largely blame it on Nintendo's focus on the Wii U, a console that's future is most definitely set in stone already. (And it's not the best future.) Instead of helping the 3DS continue with healthy sales and generate a healthy profit they instead look to try and save an already slippery slope. The 3DS can have a good road ahead of it, but no one wants to see to it. Instead we cover our eyes and pretend that the terrible 3DS sales are just "okay" or "good enough." We all need to take a look at the situation the 3DS is in and take off the blinders. Sure, it's not as bad as the Vita, but we shouldn't even be using that as a scale for how "good" the 3DS is doing in the first place. What has happened, in your opinion? What can Nintendo do to stop it, because there is a problem here. |
I said a couple years ago, that this generation of handhelds would be lucky to sell even half of their predecessors. Most people said I was crazy and that the 3DS was set to sell 100m+ (Even though all signs suggested otherwise).
But yeah so as predicted the 3DS has already peaked and will crawl to 75m tops.

Mark DS and 3DS, and mark "ALL".
There is a downward trend especially compared with the DS but there is a big spike at the end of every year!
rofl, more doom threads, people just love negativity don't they

It has been quite a bit lower than last year since December 2013.
Not fixing the Wii U problem would still cause them to bleed money regardless of the 3ds success. I mean initially the 3ds wasn't doing so great either.
Smash will out soon. So don't shit yourself.
