Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One Resources change, Will it even matter?

Based on the bit of information coming out indicating that Microsoft's latest SDK will allow developers to utilize the 10% of GPU resources being allocated to the Kinect to be used in any way they want, will it really matter?

I am somewhat technical and I can see that raising any components of a system power by 10% should have some impact.  BUT, didn't Microsoft claim that the XB1 was "perfectly balanced"?  So, raising the power of the GPU may have a very minimal impact.  Wouldn't a system so "perfectly balanced" gain little to no performance because of bottlenecks that are in the design?

I know that very few people here are true hardware people.

Will it even matter?

It is near the end of the end....

I don't get how it works. They said that you will still be able to use kinect just as before and still get the 10% boost.

Sure, why not?

Developers are learning to better utilize the hardware over time. We're seeing that based on higher resolutions and smoother frame rates. Surely that extra 10% of additional resources is worth something.

It's not reserved anymore as it is no longer required. It's up to devs now: make kinect-only game, same performance as now (despite obvious performance tweaks, better tools and so on), leave out kinect -> gain 10%.

Thanks to this forum we will definitely get to hear from people about 10% better looking games.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Assuming that their "perfectly balanced" statement is just PR nonsense, it should have a decent-ish impact. It's certainly not going to fix its current hardware issues compared to the PS4, but it can at least improve the situation.

no. 10% is very little. if anything it'll turn 22fps drops into 24fps drops.

Ah that makes sense. Thanks!

Well, giving the developers more resources doesn't mean that there isn't still some "saved" for the standard Kinect integration.

It only means that Microsoft allows developers now to use all the resources which aren't needed for the normal Kinect function which have nothing to do with integration in games. Like Skype and so on...

What I think is that Microsoft did hold some of the resources back even if they could have been used since launch to encourage developers to really use Kinect in their games. It was probably like:

"If we let developers decide to use some of Xbox One's power to integrate Kinect in their game or to use all the free resources  for other stuff like graphics, they will never put Kinect controls in their games  but if we simply reserve some of the power which they can only use if they use Kinect they may use it in their games"

I think that's how it was and since developers still didn't use Kinect in their games and since they sell Xbox without Kinect now, they simply decided  to let them use all free resources not needed for the standard Kinect integration.
