Forums - General - What is your stance on piracy?

Too many people have been making too much money from Films, TV, Music and Games for a long time now.

The various industries have been slow in developing their products for the internet world which we live in, most have even been dismissive of the technology and it wasn't until they realised they were loosing money to the internet that they have started to either provide better services or lawsuits against uploaders etc.

I do not support piracy as such but I understand how and why it exists. Adverts or Public Service Announcements regarding piracy would have you believe that it funds terrorists organisations or organised crime but the truth is just about anyone can sit at home and copy any media source and sell it on.

CD,s, DVDs and now Blu-Ray are too expensive, plus different countries have different release dates etc so when one media is released in one country and not others, there is still huge demand for it and the internet fulfills that demand! Think of all the film or game trailers that you can watch online only to find out thats its not released in your country for another four months etc. Its frustrating and illogical!

I download a lot of TV, most of it because to watch it normally would cost me well over £150 a year in satalite subscription costs.

I download lots of music, I consider it a try before you buy. I download tons of music actually and as a result I buy a lot more too typically CDs online as they can be quite cheap.

I do not download movies/DVD rips typically because the files take too long to download and are usually poor quality. I would rather pay a service fee for a HD downloading service where to right people are paid for the service they provide and the creators of the film/dvd are rewarded for its success. I do not support £20 million+ pay packets!

I have occasionally downloaded games, COD4 and Gears of War (both for PC) were the latest. I am glad I downloaded both of them! COD4 was not worth paying money for and Gears of War did not run very well so I will probably get a 360 to play it on! (buying the game legally)

I will continue to download illegally and legally an see no sign of this changing for a while.

I think the real danger is when people just expect to get EVERYTHING free off the internet. I already know people like this who just download stuff free of the net and if they cant get it for free they will not get it at all, and thats a very sad state to be heading towards!!

Keep in mind that piracy isn't stealing, no matter what the **AA would have you believe. It's copyright infringement, which is an entirely different crime.

That said, I've done my share of music-sharing on BitTorrent in the past, but that's it. Mainstream music artists already receive a pittance for every CD sold, so most of the loss in profits extends only to record executives and the RIAA. And, really, having an exec or six-figure lawyer not be able to purchase his sixth Mercedes isn't going to keep me awake at night. And for bands on indie labels, well, I'll usually buy their CDs anyway.

Games and other media are a different story, since they don't have the BS licensing contracts that the music industry does.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

Pirated videogames are unacceptable! It crushes my heart to hear when hackers succeeded in hacking Nintendo property in particular. And I believe hackers who want to hurt the games industry deserves the death sentence.

I'm much milder for music piracy though hehe.

Piracy is a crime, punished by jail sanction

it is also against creativity

Makes a lot of other people lose money or job (Do you really think the video game industry is only composed of big companies ?), like retaillers and all people working in the industry (factory etc)

and intellectually, it's like a rape...

Try Rage Of Bahamut ! Free trading card and RPG game on ITunes / Android. Use Code : Laa49998

Piracy would stop if companies were not so damn greedy and overcharged consumers for games. $60 US and more for a game thats really steep. New games should cost no more than $30 US upon release.

Well making a back up copy to a game is not a crime. It only takes one scratch and the disc does not work anymore and yeah disks break easily.

Games are HARDLY overpriced...the constant demand for better graphics and more advanced games is the cause of your $60 games.  It's not like PC games got more expensive...they're $50 as always.  Developers try to push graphics in 360 and PS3 games though...there's a few pie charts out there that show exactly how your $60 gets split up.  I doubt you'd want to see the same chart for a music CD.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

You heard it here first, folks: Piracy = mind-rape.

Now, I hope you enjoy your copyright infringement. You horrible rapists.

My feeling is if you support it (like it) you should pay for it.

Example. Back when JP3 (Jurassic Park 3) came out I watched a pirated version and I'm glad I did as I don't want to give that movie one dime.

But I would say 95% of what I download I end up buying. I'm not going to harm something I like. For me it evens out some movies I would have bought I don't and some I wouldn't of I do. But I guess the reality is I'm in the minority and at alot of people steal because its free.

Bottom line I'm completly against mass distribution (pirated) but don't have so much of a problem with it individually. Thank napster for I-tunes.

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.

Piracy is for smart people. Now I will still buy cd's, Blu-rays (never DVD's), and of course video games (too difficult/too risky to pirate usually) sometimes, but if you arent at least pirating music, you are dumb and a corporate slave.

If you really want to support a band, go see them in concert. They make WAY more from that than you buying their CD. Movie studios really don't need your help in the first place, unless it is a smaller budget indie film or a very ambitious but niche movie you want to support.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. I think a person should be paid for what they create. I have in the past taken illegal copies of media, however, since the last few years I absolutely will not. I will not even buy goods I think may have been stolen. It is just wrong.

There is no reason why you can't pay $10-$20 for a cd or dvd. There is no reason why you can't pay $30+ for a game. If you pirate, you are stealing and that is socially and morally wrong and the only reason you do it is because you know it is highly unlikely you will get caught over the internet. Bet you wouldn't walkout of a store with that CD/DVD/game.

When I see these file sharing sites go down, I applaud. When I see the industry sue some people I laugh and say good.

Now, if it is an item that is no longer available on the market, then I would say its ok since the company/creator no longer have interest. Other than that, you are just a common thief.

This is the bullshit I hate the most.  You really think you are making the world a better place by spending money?  If you truly believe that, then I pity you, utterly and sincerely.
