Version 5.0.0 U, available via an Internet connection, includes the following improvements:
New Features:

A Quick Start Menu is now displayed when users press the GamePad POWER Button or HOME Button to power on the Wii U
Users can start recently played or newly installed software directly from the Quick Start Menu *1
Wii U GamePad Alerts (special notifications from Nintendo) can be displayed on the GamePad when the Wii U is powered down
Users will be notified with an audio ringtone when a new GamePad Alert is displayed
GamePad Alerts that have been received can also be viewed through the Quick Start Menu*2
Changes to Standby Functions:

System updates will now automatically install after download when the Wii U is in Standby
Changes to the Wii U Menu:

The User Settings screen now displays when users select their User Mii from the Wii U Menu
The design and layout of the Users Settings screen has been updated
This includes the ability to switch the active user from the User Settings screen
Changes to System Settings:

Quick Start Menu options have been added to Power Settings

(*2) Wii U GamePad Alerts are different from the notifications received via the Wii U Notifications feature. Wii U GamePad Alerts settings can be changed via Power Settings located in System Settings.

Wooo! Its about time that update showed up! Updating now!

Some pretty good changes in there...obviously the Quick Start and auto-installs are the standouts though ^.^

I've just install it. One nice feature is you can now set a default profile so you don't have to select your profile every time you boot (If there are multiple profiles of course).

Interesting... So WiiUPad is not just a controller with a screen, it can do some basic things by itself, and those things could be changed/improved...

You could select a default user ages ago. I've had it like that for quite some time.

If I had too choose, I'm not sure if I would have picked a real messaging system or what the new update system brings. What's certain is that Nintendo need to get their heads out of their asses and do something about the communication between players who wants to play communicate to each other while playing.

Miiverse is fine, but the integration of it in the console, with the separate friendslist app is horrible. And it takes a bit too long to boot up. No real way to know when you recieve messages while playing.

There should be an option to get notfication on screen/pad, or the whole message itself, but alas, all we get is a blinking blue light that you never know what signals.

The chat is also rather underwhelming.

It's disturbing that this issue hasn't been fixed yet, it's not like the console has just launched.

OS is also faster.

Is this is the winter update that was going to make it faster? ... or was that already released?

I do like updates that help improve a console. Im sure it will update tonight when i get home from work when i go to play mario kart. :)
