I've heard that developers really struggled to get 3D games to render on the Saturn. |
Then you should stop listening to those people, whoever they are.
And regarding your comment about arcades, that would also be a point in favor of Saturn as Sega was the giant of Arcades - virtua fighter, virtua cop, daytona, etc.
Playstation won because it was much less expensive and had their on network of distribution through Sony.

why ? because they were playing a character with tits and a brittish accent ?
for me the only real game changing consoles were:
Atari 2600, C64 (if you can count this as a console), PS1, XBOX (for being finally able to have a cheap media center) and this generation PS4 (eventhough Xbox one is different because of the HDMI input, but it's not really a new idea)!
If we can count in handheld consoles, it must be the Atari Lynx as this gave me finally some real console games in the palm of my hand!!

Ok, I will stop listening to developers.
I never said anything about arcades.
Decided to google that last point. Apparently the Saturn, PS1 and N64 were pretty much price matched in the US from 1996 onwards.

The NES made console gaming what it is today with an iconic controller and decent game franchises, many of which are still here today getting sequels. (there were good games before but not so much quality control) Also Nintendo saved the console industry from itself.
I would put the PS1 and Game Boy in joint second. PS1 because it made gaming very popular and a cool thing to do, not to mention the classic games are on it. Although I think Nintendo set the way forward in the industry with the NES. While, Game Boy also because it proved that proper handheld gaming was possible given the technology at the time.
Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030
Atari 2600, NES, PS and Wii.
These were the game changers and revolutionaries.
