Forums - Nintendo - Did anyone predict Wii U to do this bad? If so, why?

I didn't like the name and I wasn't super excited about the launch stuff... so that got me worried we'd have another 3DS on our hands, a tough sell and a sales drop.

I never expected it would fall this hard, though. But it deserved it most of last year, I can't lie! I want to be convinced it doesn't deserve it anymore and I hope E3 will erase all my doubt with games.

I did. Nintendo consoles in general don't sell much (Wii being the exception but it didn't target the hardcore). They tried targeting the casual audience again but we knew that they were already leaving the Wii early last gen so they wouldn't come back to the Wii U.

In terms of the core gaming audience, the Wii U doesn't have good enough third party support.

I did expect the system to perform poorly in the market... the whole concept behind the system, the confusing unveiling at E3 2011, the "soulless and empty" presentation at E3 2012 all set off red flags as far as I was concerned, all this following two whole years where Nintendo practically left its predecessor high and dry.

However, even if I expected the system to 'flop', I never expected it´d be struggling to reach Gamecube numbers, now that was surprising.

Yes. Well maybe not this bad.  http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=145235&page=

Why? E3 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPvjRwCeakM

Shitting on everything that made them successful last gen. It would have been better to ignore the 'Wii casualz' instead of actively crapping on them.

Wii Sports/Fit: Really, a tablet? For motion control games? REALLY????? It's on the floor in most of the E3 videos.

"new disruption, assymetric gameplay" Reggie E3 2012. They thought assymetric gameplay was going to be disruptive, just like augmented reality and 3D. If Reggie was being honest here then Nintendo are idiots. I think the truth is that Nintendo would love to have 3D-U gamepads out right about now.

Maybe ass gameplay would be disruptive but don't force it onto 2D Mario, even if it is a phoned-in piece of shit and then go on to announce another 2D Mario for 3DS.

Last minute announcement for 2nd gamepad games hints that they were overlooking traditional local multiplayer in favour of singleplayer. Any dual gamepad games been announced lately?

If Nintendo would have made a real Wii upgrade, they could still introduce the gamepad with Nintendoland later and have it do off-tv stuff and play DS games.

No new IP worthy of a new Nintendo console.

Tbh I had no opinion on it, I wasn't following the Wii or WiiU so didn't know much about it until it released. I was to busy with the PS3 vs 360 war xD

OT: I definitely didn't predict such absolutely terrible sales, but I knew for a fact that it wouldn't sell anywhere near like the Wii. I was, I think, expecting somewhere below 50 Million a few weeks after launch. That's far off now.

Yes I did.

I remember watching the Wii U reveal and sitting in shock after it thinking how could they fuck this up so badly?

The lack of power made it obvious the 3rd party games would be nowhere.

The Confusing name.

The gimmick controller.

The lack of any killer launch title.

The lack of advertising.

I will be picking my Mario Kart 8 bundle up this Saturday and when a friend asked what system it was for I said Wii U.

He asked what the fuck is that? This is coming from someone who owned a Wii and yet had no idea Nintendo had released another console.

If it wasn't for Zelda, I wouldn't be buying one, and I have owned every Nintendo console they've released.

The motion gimmick worked for casuals and now they have left for tablets, and the core gamers need power and 3rd party games.

So I was right. I knew it wouldn't do as well as Wii even then.

Edit: I would also like to point out that you made that thread in July of 2012. The reality of how bad things could get didn't really hit me until a week or so after the release of the Wii U. The release was very good, but the following weeks were not.
