Forums - Gaming - About the "eigth gen is only a prettier seventh gen" argument

Are u sure thats what people are saying? From what ive seen most people are complaining that the majority of games are cross-gen meaning there is little reason to upgrade yet. Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, and Ryse: Son of Rome are the only exclusives for Xbox One and Killzone: Shadowfall, Knack and Infamous: Second Son are the only exclusives for Playstation 4, all the multiplats are either cross-gen or late ports.

Honestly, we shouldn't have to give it time. By April of the Wii's second year, it already had LoZ: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. By april of the Wii U's second year, it had Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Compared to the Wii, that's absolutely pitiful.

The only next gen game I've seen so far is No Man's Sky. Everything else is a retread or not here yet. And the PS4/XBO drought are just as bad as the Wii U's was last year. No amount of last gen ports can fix that.

See: "law of diminishing returns". So far the 8th gen represents the smallest inter-generational leap in terms of graphics, hardware and gameplay features that we've seen.

8-16 bit went from a handful of colors, tiny sprites and just two buttons to mega sprites, hundreds of colors, mode 7, and 6 buttons.

16-32/64 bit went from improved 2D graphics to fully realized 3D graphics and CD quality sound, more buttons, and 360 degree analog control.

You conveninetly skipped a generation to validate your point?

We had the 8bit generation (NES: Super mario world, duck hunt, metal gear) then we had the 16bit gen (SNES: contra 3, final fight, street fighter 2, mortal kombat)

If you look at the above mentioned generations, while inroads were made into mode 7, it was still all 2d gaming. just with better sound, sprites and more colours on screen.

The jump from PS3/360 to PS4/XBO is exactly the same thing with the jump from the 8bit era to the 16bit era with the differences being more in the details and how much more of those details and to what level they can be rendered than a complete generational shift in game design. If you really wanna get into it, we can actually go even further gack all the way to the commodore, amstrad, amiga...etc and you will see that in the past 30yrs of gaming there has been only two evolutionary shifts. 2D to 3D and then 3D to 3D HD.

Every generation also brings in something extra, like the example you made about more buttons and online gaming, last gen brought it motion gaming (which in truth was just carried over from the PS2 gen) and a more expansive network. This gen so far has just built on all those tings and at least with the PS4 wil be bringing streaming gaming in PSnow (which in truth is just built on something that existed in the previous gen too) and VR. And of course we have mobile app supported stuff.

Personally, i think gamers today just whine, bitch and complain more than ever to the point where they write a lot of stuff that actually aren't based on any facts. Actually, they go as far as twist the actual facts to paint the exact kinda picture they want for what reason I have no idea.... maybe its cool or something.

And if we really went into detail especially on the hardware side of things, you will see how much rea;ly gets added on....

Hello nintendo, we told you HD games weren't easy to make.........

Obviously you knew that right? HD games are more resouce and time heavy?Especially when making new engines for new platforms?

I really don't get it though, do some people even know what they are talking about. Look at nintendo. As a company the only thing they is make games. thats all they do. Thats where they get tehir money from. Take every single wiiU game released and announced for the past and next 18 months respectively...... no get this, if nintendo could release every single on of those games on wiiU launch day they would have done just that. Cause games sell consoles. They know that more than you could ever know that. Unfortunately, in the world they live in... which is very different from yours, rainbow shitting unicorns dont just spit out games.

It's simple. People have short memories and access to the internet. I'm sure these same types of people were saying the exact same things in previous gens, but they were only saying it to themselves or friends.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

So far this generation in terms of hardware, gameplay and multimedia features has literally everything the last gen had, just with prettier visuals.  1. The Wii U is literally an extension of the Wii (it even uses the same exact controllers for multiplayer), the 2. XB1 is the same as the 360 only with Kinect 2.0, and the 3. PS4 is the same as the PS3 only with better developer-friendly architecture. So far we have not seen any major leaps hardware or gameplay wise in the 8th gen as we've seen in previous generations.

I can't believe i deleted this part when i quoted you initially, this has got to be the most doublesided thing have read in a while.

  1. And you nicely ommit their new contriller and at least them finally making a HD console. Much bigger than just going from 8-16bit if i may add.
  2. say something is the same then dismiss what its done diferently? It does have kinect 2.0, has the TV pass through thingy, and is considerably more powerful than the X360. If you don't care for something that doesn't man that thing doesn't exist.
  3. Doing it again, PS4 is the same with PS3 but with better architecture???????? Like wtf??? Do you realize what going from cell to X64 is? what going from a split 512mb of ram to 8Gb of GDDR5 ram means? First actual controller redesign in PS history and addition of a touch pad? VR?

You know you are twisting facts the very things you say can be used to point out what you aren't saying.

edited to not come off as offensive..... my apologies if i seemed that way.

Edit:  I appreciate you changing your post.  For future reference please don't delete Mod edits regardless though, as other posters need to see that you were moderated (its a transparency thing). Cheers - Starcraft

Umm, I welcome the prettier graphics. It's about time we got graphics that caught up with technology, and the PS4 games are a visual treat, load faster, and online features are better. You should not forget about all the other enhancements with Gen 8 beside the prettier graphics.  It's just all around a better console to play on.

Plus who wants to play on 2006 tech forever, or even worse on Wii standard def?

I get that as long as there are cross-gen games you don't really "have" to upgrade, but before long Gen 7 will stop getting ports and you will have to upgrade anyway just to play regular new games.   So what are you saving in the long term other than your enjoyment right now?  For me it wouldn't save me much in the long run to keep buying new games on PS/360 instead of on PS4. New games are still $60, and you just get the better version on PS4, which is a better treat and will keep it's value longer.

That's bullshit. They should have accounnted for that and hired more staff.  That's an appologist answer. They are 110% at fault with this.

You're the smartest person on this thread.

FFX would have had to be MASSIVELY scaled back to work on the PS1. Had we seen a game before with that amount of voice acting? The graphical leap between FFXIX and X was enormous. Compare that to the difference between Infamous 1 and 2 and it's clear how much of a difference it was.

As for the SNES, that's an awfully cherry picked example. Could the NES handle Mario World? I'm not sure. There were a lot of levels and they were a lot longer than the NES games had. But, lets say that it could. Could the NES do Pilot Wings? Could it do F-Zero? Nope.

You couldn't do Wii Sports on the Wii. Nor could you do Wario Ware or Raving Rabbids. I enjoyed these games very much. You can throw Elebits onto that list as well as Excite Bike and Red Steel. First two of those were underrated. The last was not so good. I didn't have a 360 or a PS3 at launch, but simply by virtue of the jump from SD to HD they were a big graphical leap.

The reason we're impatient is because not only are no awesome new experiences available, but no awesome new experiences have even been ANNOUNCED. We have the order which seems so far to be gears of Steam Punk, Drive Club, another Assassin's Creed, another Arkham, another COD, a new Witcher, and so on so forth. On Nintendo's end, we've had Wonderful 101, Nintendo Land, Zombi U, and a bunch of sequels. Some fun stuff, but not much that couldn't have been done the generation before.

There are only a couple of interesting games on the horizon. Sunset Overdrive looks interesting, but I have to see how it plays out. Looks like a mix of Dead Rising with Ratchet which could be fun. Project Spark looks interesting, but we'll see if the reality of it is as seemless as demos.

But yeah, crappy generation so far. Hopefully that will change.

I also think the problem in the reasonning is to diminish the impact of previous generation. F-Zero at launch had a tremendous impact, anyone at this time felt for sure it was impossible to make this game on NES. Any 3D game at the PS1 launch was impossible to achieve on the Super NES. PS360 added color, depth and HD, it was great.

Perhaps only at PS2 launch I felt "it's the same but slightly scaled up". And it took time to really push new things. I hope it's just a question of time... By the way, do someone think the social thing, like uploading game videos, facebook integration, etc. makes this generation awesome ?
