Not only is that an incorrect claim, it also makes no sense.

how is it incorrect? Alot of people thought PS4 was going to come along and kill Wii U. And how does it not make sense? People are calling it a flop in Japan because it is selling much worse than expected.

First off who is this everybody you speak of thats a sweeping generalization: http://www.logicalfallacies.info/presumption/sweeping-generalisation/
It took the PS4 5 months to outsell the Wii U worldwide, the PS4 has been in Japan for 3 months, in a market where it has little games to compete against the Wii U which has a much larger marketshare relative to the rest of the world. People calling it a flop are simply making the same mistake as those who said the Wii U would crush the PS4 and XB1 Worldwide. Their is insufficent information and we haven't seen the PS4 in similar scenarios to the Wii U yet, i.e holidays i.e system sellers.
Unrealistic sales expectations based on improbable actual sales doesn't make the impossible a reality, giving the Wii U 1year 5 months and Smash and Mario Kart, but cutting off the PS4 at 3 months is simply moving the goalposts. You can't call something a flop yet if it hasn't had a chance to fail. Assuming we've got a short gen, the PS4 literally has 69 more months 2300% of its lifetime, is completely ignored because some people want to believe that the Wii U is still going to be like the Wii.
Now that the Wii U has been outsold world wide, gap increasing, effectively making the year they had worthless, the only hope to cling to is that Wii U is still ahead in Japan, a hollow "victory" because its only a matter of time.
