a question for people that want Iwata leave: who will replace him?

That depends, were did Iwata and Yamauchi come from?

Well Yamauchi's family owned Nintendo most of its existence since 1889, and every President of the company was from the family before Iwata. Iwata has worked at Nintendo for something like 30 years.

That was low! :)

I know. Couldn't help myself lol

:D

Iwata has been president for 12 years now and he has overseen one of greatest periods with the DS and the Wii, and the 3DS. The only knock on him is the Wii U mess which is slowing improving. If he does resign or is removed I expect that someone from in the company will raised to replace him probably around the same he was when he took over in 2002.

In just a few short weeks Nintendo's investors will be voting on whether or not they want to keep Iwata around. With dysmal WiiU sales, major losses, and underperforming 3DS numbers is this Iwata's swan song?

Major losses? Underperforming 3DS numbers? Where is this coming from? Here's Nintendo's net income for the last 6 years (displaying the year at the end of the financial year):

2009: 257 billion yen
2010: 229 billion yen
2011: 78 billion yen
2012: -43 billion yen
2013: 7 billion yen
2014: -23 billion yen

As you can see, their net income (which is where you determine "profit") is a loss... but a rather small one, less than 10% of the profit made in 2009 and about 10% of the profit made in 2010. Indeed, the net loss over the last three years is less than the profit made in the lacklustre 2011.

And the 3DS numbers are only underperforming relative to Nintendo's highly optimistic predictions made at the start of the fiscal year; their total 3DS sales have remained almost steady from the previous year (they predicted 18 million, it was around 12 million, compared to 13-14 million in the previous two years).

What's more, that -23 billion yen number from 2014? It's entirely due to things like R&D and advertising expenditures in Q4 - indeed, their Q4 net income was -33 billion yen, meaning that they were up 10 billion yen prior to that expenditure.

So no, Iwata isn't about to lose his job. Indeed, the only legitimate gripe against Iwata is the "dismal" Wii U sales. And that's something that is likely to at least improve this year, given that two of the biggest franchises - Mario Kart and Smash Bros - are set for release, alongside a new Zelda title (Hyrule Warriors) and the retail version of Wii Sports Club.

That's not really how it is.

The way to judge if a business is going well is to look at the operating income, and not at the net income, which takes into account 1 time happenings like sales of buildings, exchange rate movements, etc.

If we go back and check the operating results, we get the following:

2008: 555bn yen

2009: 356bn yen

2010: 171bn yen

2011: -37bn yen

2012: -36bn yen

2013: -46 bn yen

Here the trend is one of total decline and sustained losses, 3 consecutive years of operating red numbers. I dont think Iwata will go, only because of the QoL promise, but he will have to resign if the QoL launch is a failure, since they will be consistently on the red with the VG department on years to come

I'm pretty sure he's a cool guy but he has that old man mentality thats hurting Nintendo. He should leave, but he probably won't.

At a age of 54 Iwata is actually the youngest person on the board of directors at Nintendo, the average age of members being 67.

Yikes. Older than dirt Japanese suits trying to operate in a market that (at least with consoles) is almost entirely 12-35 year old Western males. Nintendo badly needs people in their 30s/40s on their board, specifically people who have lived in the US/Europe or know those markets well.

It's not a surprise that Nintendo seems so out of touch. I also suspect this is where the push to go into Quality of Life comes from too, I have a feeling it will be majorly targetted at seniors, which is a huge chunk of the Japanese population.

Go check the boardroom of any large company. I gurantee you it will be 90% people over the age of 40.

You don't get to be on a boardroom without grinding for a while in the lower levels.

Would you be firing your manager if he has lost money for you in the last 3 years?

To be fair, i think they made a small profit last year (2013 fy). But revenue has been going down ever since 2010. No investor wants to see declining revenue on a yearly basis.

If I were to bet, Iwata will 100% be gone this year.

The fact he is still CEO makes me think he has some very strong support among some large stockholders or he at least has them in his pocket- ....however, he has made enough big mistakes and shown enough to illustrate his lack of operating abilities that he has earned his way out of a job - IMO Nintendo is either on its way to becoming a privately held company (and Iwata has been sandbagging) or they will make a change at CEO within the next 6+- months or they will stick w Iwata no matter what and he will run Nintendo into the ground

I would be less inclined to fire him if he made huge profits the four years before that.
