Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo to offer Wii DLC and you have to pay for some online games X_X

But Sony isn't doing it. I think there would be less objection if Sony were, but Sony isn't.

It's a glaring flaw in your sarcastic reply, Gamer Girl. It isn't "everyone else" already doing it, it's "Microsoft and but not Sony."

How long will that remain such?  Free online is definitely a competitive advantage for a console company at this point however when both your competitors offer paid online service, the company must ask itself is it better to be the "free alternative" or the "cheapest alternative?"

With Sony's games division being in the red for so long, I wonder how powerful that distinction will really turn out to be.

ATTENTION, ATTENTION

NO FREE CONSOLE MMO CAN EXIST UNLESS THE DEVELOPER TAKES THE SERVER COSTS OUT OF ITS OWN POCKET!

Thanks for listening. There is this MMO for PS3 the Agency or whatever that was...I think that's free to play...but they recover server costs through downloadable content I believe. But otherwise, Sony's fronting the cost I think. No normal third party company can pay for an MMO out of their own pocket...that does not make sense!!

So again, people that say oh, Wii should be free online. IT IS, this is not Xbox Live where you have to pay to play a simple online FPS or something like that. But no system can reasonably support an MMO with all the requirements they take without taking a fee from users. Unless Nintendo paid for all third party servers, Nintendo needs to support a way for third parties to charge for MMOs.

It's either make a system for developers to charge customers fees for certain content, or those developers will not make said content, because it would be in no way profitable for them to do so.

That's why you don't get a new TF2 map on 360 and PS3...it would take a considerable cost to put those maps on the consoles, and it's not worth it to Valve to do it, unless they charged for it. But of course...not enough people would probably pay for 1 map...so I doubt they'll ever do it.

*cough*GuildWars*cough*

Guild Wars is so not "free." It's cheaper than WoW, certainly, but hardly free. They've had four expansion packs in the 2+ years the game has existed, not to mention the original game. It doesn't add up to 156 dollars a year, as WoW does, but it's not too far off either. It's a trick of the eye.

Hypothetical question. Which is better, a game where you pay 10 dollars a month that updates all content for free, or a game that has no monthly subscription but has 2 expansion packs a year for 59.99? Answer: it's exactly the same price, so it just depends on whose content you prefer.

WoW has it's expansion packs as well. Of course, they come far less often.

But that's beside the point. You took my comment far too seriously. I was pointing out the one minor exception to his argument just to ruffle his feathers. :P

Hey DMeisterJ, how many MB of your internal memory is taken up right now?

lol.

Don't own a Wii.

But I have an elite 360, and I have forty two megabytes left.

Ya, that was my entire point.  Thanks.

How big are each of the songs?

tabsina,

Dude, are you on crack or something. Why would they charge Europe and Australia to play Brawl online when they are not charging Japan or North America? It would not make sense.

Darn, I should have made a bet with you instead. I need some virtual money really, really badly.
How about we cancel the top part of my post and gamble. I will take your bet. After I win, I'm going to Vegas and spend your VG dollars.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

interesting thread but too long to read it ,anyways the good news is that the wii will have DLC.

Yes Guild Wars has free servers.

A) It is not a typical MMO...you only fight with what...7 friends max? 11? I forget. Anyway, the strain is much less on servers than with full MMOs where it is possible to run into dozens of other players on the go. Guild Wars only has cities with tons of players, and even then its split into regions to reduce server strain.

B) There are multiple expansions and they are EXPENSIVE. WoW has had, what, one expansion pack, and it was like $20 right? It's cheap because they already get their money from monthly fees.

Any normal MMO has to charge a monthly fee or charge for expansions. You cannot have both for free, that makes no sense. Since this is true, Nintendo needs a way for third parties to charge for these fees, and this is how.

I feel like some people might think I'm defending Nintendo blindly like a fanboy, but everything here makes sense...as long as they don't slap on the Pay to Play logo on the wrong games.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I just hope Nintendo will explain themselves quickly. Otherwise, this thread will grow to massive proportions.

Today, I think the views of many people towards Nintendo have changed, but this is only b/c of the vagueness of information we have been presented with.

I think you guys are all over-reacting.

First off, this isn't replacing regular wifi, just another option should a game have downloadable content (GH4) or be MMO based. Nothing shocking or unusual here, you pay on MS and Sony service for downloadable content too. And MMOs are always some form of pay-to-play.

This is also probably key to their expansion in China/India and South America where you can bet 90% of games will be pirated. So to be profitable in those areas, you need to have pay-to-play games.

 Correct!

What this means is that we'll still get the same number of free online games, but now we'll also have developers jumping on the Wii with interest in creating games to charge for.

This can't drive away casuals, because the games that casuals would play in the first place most likely will have free online. It'll be "hardcore"-type games that have pay-to-play.

Lastly, free online = limited online support. However, if you're paying for online play, then you'll be more guaranteed to have support well into the future.

Anyone that complains about this is ignorant to the facts.

it will not be that much, like xbox live, but instead of a 50$ flat fee, it might be 10$ per game per year.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need...
