Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft in talks to boost performance of Kinectless consoles - utilising extra 10% graphics resources

im guessing they would build one game set of resources that doesnt use kinect. if kinect is plugged in it simply wont work while playing the game.

Like I said, a lot of extra work for devs for a few fps or slightly better textures.

It'll be the first console ever in such a situation.

If this is worth it, then console manufacturers might as well release different SKUs with beefed up graphics cards at a higher price. I'd pay $100 extra for a PS4 that does all games at 1080p60fps.

But that's never going to happen.

that's what i was thinking.  it would be like xbone has 2 skus.  porting costs aren't massive but they aren't negligable either.  i have a hard time believing developers will be willing to do that.  ..and the PR of people talking about how kinect downgrades their game would be a nightmare imo.

I have. I recalled specifically on these boards one user voiced discontent over paying full price for Titanfall when just shortly later Microsoft offered it free with an Xbox One.

Sensationalist article but who can blame them. Ms handling of this gen has been a huge boon to the gaming media.

That is indeed quite funny.

I know if had bought one i would be pissed off. Maybe there arent many here, or they are hiding in shame. :P

I mean could they not have it in the programming where whenever a game is being played, it eliminates the resources that are going to Kinect automatically? I mean this will again go directly against everything they previously said about Kinect but it wouldn't split the userbase.

That sounds like a bad idea.

Big plus for a console is stability. But if MS branches consoles between those with and without Kinect in terms of GPU performance, that will create hardships I'd think on development as well as consumer confidence since late comers technically have "better" consoles.

Well you could apparently just disconnect the Kinect to get the same affect, but I agree I think it would be a possible headache for devs

I don't think removing Kinect is the issue. But making one version more powerful than the other is.
