Outsold the competition by more than 5 times - still a failure - VGChartz Logic.
Nintendo will forever be criticized no matter how well their systems sell.

Sales disappoint me. Mainly because the library also disappoints me. Maybe if it received DS like sales it could have had a DS like library. Instead we are left with an average line up of games that while I will enjoy oh so much but I wont find myself looking back at the 3DS in 10,15, 20 years time to play a bunch of hidden gems I never played when the console was still relevant.

Last I checked the systems success and failure does not ride on the sales of the competitor but the internal goals of Nintendo themselves.
Well, for a doomed system in a doomed market, I'd say it must be considered very successful.

If you take the DS out of the picture, the 3DS is doing perfectly fine considering how doomed the dedicated handheld market is!

I doubt it will reach the GBA sales. I think it's fine, but maybe Nintendo expected to do better.

It's a fine system, but I can't help but feel like it's completely antiquated. The tech in my iPhone 4S makes it feel like an artifact and that's a three year old phone. The UI is painfully slow, the graphics seem stuck between N64 and Gamecube, the online store takes forever to load and you can FORGET trying to watch Netflix on the thing. The only thing I really like about it is the game library but even then, are those games worth spending $40.00-$50.00 on? I guess it depends on who you ask.

And everytime Nintendo is doing bad there is a need of bring Vita to discuss :P OT: the sales are still pretty damn good for the times we are living. It guarantees at least one more gen for Nintendo handhelds. |
How about the PSP Go?
3ds could still pass gba by sheer will of being on the market several years longer. I think this year will be telling if it will achieve that or not though, if the 3ds has truly peaked things could get ugly.
I would have liked it to beat GBA (still possible but looking less likely). Obviously it was never going to top the DS. I'm happy overall so far; yeah it could have been better, but it's holding its own against the mobile/tablet onslaught, which has affected home console sales as well. With Smash and Pokemon this year, it should be another good one.
