Forums - Nintendo - Why the Wii U is the worst Nintendo console of all time (Gamecube comparison)

You would hope that those would be better than games released 10 years ago.

Gaming moves forward you know.

That's why Sonic 2 ( 1992) was better than Sonic 4 ( 2010)?  There are many exceptions to that rule you know!

No gamecube had the worst 3rd party. At the time third party imo was the worst it's ever been, but the wii u has some great ones. Ubisoft and Sega are keeping with them and it still has some games from EA and activision. Plus what first party is turning into for me is if the new Ip everyone keeps talking about. If that IP beats pikmin and animal crossing then wii u wins that category also.

Sorry if I sound angry I'm just counteracting your points you can believe whatever you want to believe.

Nonsense.

Metal Gear Solid. Final Fantasy. Resident Evil. Viewtiful Joe. P.N.O.3. Burnout. Fifa. Timesplitters. Super Monkey Ball. Sonic. SSX. Lord of the Rings. Prince of Persia. Killer 7. Tales of Symphonia. Igaruga. Sphinx. Phantasy Star Online. Beyond Good and Evil. Soul Calibur. Skies of Arcadia. Star Wars Rogue Squadron.

Like I said,

Nonsense.

GC's controller was far from standard. Hell, the Wii U gamepad is more standard than it was, so I don't see your complaint there.

I actually kind of agree with your other points, though. From the looks of things, Nintendo's first party output this gen actually will be less than it was for the GC, and third party support is already even more dismal than GC's as well.

I still can't understand how Ninty could launch the Gamecube at such a ridiculously low price without taking major losses. Whatever their secret was, they clearly forgot it with the Wii U - they're definitely asking for a lot of dough for what you get.

- Four face buttons CHECK

- Two analogue sticks CHECK

- DPad CHECK

- Shoulder buttons CHECK

It was not far from standard. The ONLY difference was that it had only 3 shoulder buttons versus 4 on PS2 and XBox. Just cause the buttons are shaped a little differently doesn't change the nuber of inputs and where they are located at all.

1. Graphics: GC was pretty advanced for its time, competing with both PS2 and Xbox for best graphics output at the time. In contrast, Wii U is a generation behind the PS4 and XB1.

not true

3. Third party support: GC had pretty strong support with Capcom releasing some of the best RE games ever. While it didn't have as much support as the competition, it still had publisher interest. In contrast; third party support is all but dead on the Wii U.

not true

5. First party titles: I personally didn't like Mario Sunshine, I thought it was really boring. I know Zelda was also controversial but later received a cult following which led to the re-release on Wii U. Metroid was also a stellar title. So far it's too early to tell what the quality will be on the Wii U but I know many have praised Mario world. I doubt we'll see two new Zelda games like on the GC and I also doubt we'll see any new Metroid. I think the GC will probably come ahead as the winner here in the future.

??? this is literally just speculation/opinion

Gamecube was WAY more powerful than PS2 and was competing with Xbox's strongest titles.

Third party support WAS pretty good. (see my post a few posts above)

It looks like there are a lot of people on this thread that don't know what they're talking about.

I hope somebody already pointed out that $200 back in 2001 does not equal $200 in 2014.

And in my opinion the WiiU compares a lot more favorably against the competition than the original Wii did.

I hope someone has pointed out to you that electronic devices (and game consoles in general) don't follow inflation in the way you are insinuating.

PS2 launched at $299 and the Xbox also. The Gamecube was 2/3rds of the price and was (technically) on par with those two (in terms of games). The same cannot be said for Wii U.

@OP

I agree with much of what you say. I am certain that any serious gamer would have preferred Nintendo going down the Gamecube route instead of the Wii U route this gen. But of course it's not so simple for them. I tried clearing up some things with my posts above since it seems like people underestimate the power of the Gamecube compared to its rivals and also the great library of games it had.

As of now, I fully agree. Though I've spent countless hours on games like Pikmin 3, WindWaker HD, 3D World, DKCTF, Rayman legends, and Black Flag, there is a lot of room for improvement. I think by the end it will end up being better than the GameCube. Honestly, 3rd party doesn't do anything for Nintendo. Anyone saying it means a lot, then why did games like Call of Duty, Batman, Assassin's Creed, EA Sports, Mass Effect, etc. not push ANY units. It's the Nintendo games that make Nintendo consoles sell. Maybe some 3rd party platformers like Sonic and Just Dance will sell a few, but let's be honest. Nintendo could pack Just Dance 4, Sonic Lost World, and Skylanders SwapForce in a Wii U and it wouldn't make it sell as much as just having Mario available for the console.

XBOX ONE/Wii U/3DS/PC

RIP Iwata 12/6/1959-7/11/2015

Thanks for all the great memories!

Sometimes I think people forget that the Virtual Console exists.

Wii and Wii U are the top two Nintendo home consoles ever. It's no contest.

You never played with the Wii U, I can tell.

Yeah, there is a reason the gamecube was 100 bucks cheaper too, it didnt have a dvd drive.  Dvd technology was still pretty expensive back in 2000.  Ps2 is actually one of the major reasons it got pushed into the mainstream and drove prices down.  There were a lot of bells and whistles included in the ps2 and xbox that werent included in the gamecube (ie hard drive, usb ports, dvd, etc.). There is a reason they were able to come in at a hundred bucks cheaper.

Also, inflation factors in quite a bit with game consoles.  The last few generations have seen the game consoles coming out at higher prices then the gen before.  One reason for that is inflation.  The 200 dollar gamecube, for example, would have the purchasing power equivalent of about 270 today.
