I hope somebody already pointed out that $200 back in 2001 does not equal $200 in 2014.

And in my opinion the WiiU compares a lot more favorably against the competition than the original Wii did.

I hope someone has pointed out to you that electronic devices (and game consoles in general) don't follow inflation in the way you are insinuating.

PS2 launched at $299 and the Xbox also. The Gamecube was 2/3rds of the price and was (technically) on par with those two (in terms of games). The same cannot be said for Wii U.

Yeah, there is a reason the gamecube was 100 bucks cheaper too, it didnt have a dvd drive.  Dvd technology was still pretty expensive back in 2000.  Ps2 is actually one of the major reasons it got pushed into the mainstream and drove prices down.  There were a lot of bells and whistles included in the ps2 and xbox that werent included in the gamecube (ie hard drive, usb ports, dvd, etc.). There is a reason they were able to come in at a hundred bucks cheaper.

Also, inflation factors in quite a bit with game consoles.  The last few generations have seen the game consoles coming out at higher prices then the gen before.  One reason for that is inflation.  The 200 dollar gamecube, for example, would have the purchasing power equivalent of about 270 today.
