I hope someone has pointed out to you that electronic devices (and game consoles in general) don't follow inflation in the way you are insinuating.
PS2 launched at $299 and the Xbox also. The Gamecube was 2/3rds of the price and was (technically) on par with those two (in terms of games). The same cannot be said for Wii U.
