Releasing such a system now would be totally useless, in my opinion. You can get a PS2 with lots of games and 2 controllers for less than 50 euros. It wouldn't push any PS3 sales.

Not all places have easily to find and cheap PS2 to buy.

But the main places have them, and a damn lot of them. Btw, "full" ps2 bc would mean including the whole ps2 hardware which would be tough to do in an ultraslim case and probably won't ever hit $100.

But the discussion is for the usual late markets that sony dominates and keep steady sales for some more years... those aren't the kind of places were PSNow will be available nor where a PS2 cheap and working is easily available anymore. But I do agree that it would be a little more expensive to make it cheaper with the backward compatibility, but we can't be sure.

Backward compatibility for PS2/PS1 is a niche market. Playing PS3 games on PS4 would be useful, but we know that PS Now is for playing PS3 games, albeit with connection latency. However, PS1 and PS2 games are really old, and I'm guessing those games have not aged well. Also, I'm also guessing that those games would look horrible on a HD TV. Definitely a niche market vying for nostaliga but majority (if not all) have no interest in playing non-remastered PS1 or PS2 games. Time to move on.....

PS1 games really look bad on a HDTV, PS2 games not so much... but possibly it would have a impact no so great, but even if for a new formfactor I know it would ship some more.

Unfortunately, Both the ps3 and ps2 use different chipsets, and trust me, emulation is not perfect. There are always games that don't run properly. Ask any emulation vet like myself. You'll have maybe 80% of all the games available, and maybe 20% of those will have distortions, plus, they would need someone to code them for emulation. It's not like people just make image files and run them through the emulator. There is quite a bit of coding involved. Each game probably would take a small team of four 2-3 days at the very least.
Furthermore, sadly enough, I think Sony wants to abandon the ps3 as quickly as possible. The chipset inside is still very expensive to make. It must kill them thinking about the margins on it....thinking that they're spending so much on such a difficult architecture that didn't pan out. Everytime I would look at the bottom line, I'd be revisiting the feeling of failure. No, ps3 has to go. Bring on PSNow, ps4, and let's see a new vita too.

If it has the legs of PS1 and PS2, it can easily do 120 million I think but i would probably buy one if they released a PS3 with PS2 support. That would be awesome but I doubt they would do it. Would be a great way to introduce PS3 to developing markets where PS2 is still very popular

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

I would buy one immediately

Not happening. Why? Simple. If full PS2 backwards compatibility is exclusive to this model, it means this model has PS2 hardware in it, which would greatly increase costs. Backwards compatibility will either happen via software only, meaning other PS3 models will get it too, or not at all. I'm guessing the latter, considering how late it is now.

I'm saying about 90 million. Highly doubt it would create that much buzz
