"Dragon Ball" Creator Reveals Android No. 17 and 18's Names

Plus the latter career of No. 17

(one day ago)

Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama has a couple Q&A's published in Japan today. There's a "Twel-Buu Mysteries" in Saikyō Jump, and there's bonus material in volumes 4-6 of the new color editions of the Cell arc. What's really grabbed the attention of Japanese fans is that he's revealed the names of Androids No. 17 and 18.

No. 17 is Lapis and No. 18 is Lazuli.

Toriyama also revealed that after the Cell arc No. 17 becomes a park ranger at a nature preserve. He's well suited to the work and shows no mercy to poachers! In this happy ending, he's well paid and married to a zoologist with two adopted children.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

That's... kind of random. Any reason given for these particular names?

I do like that they both got happy endings. They kind of deserved it, since they weren't evil by choice (i think Toriyama's story was that they were teenage runaways whom Gero captured and remade into cyborgs, which would be the closer term for them than Androids, which is why the all-organic Cell could absorb them and not the mechanical Android 16. Either way, they were human to start with)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

And we only had to wait 18 years! Wonderful!

....ehhhhhhh.

I'd have more sympathy for them if they didn't kill their creator and then cause a massive apocolypse in the mirai timeline.

Which there seems to be no reasonable explination for why they decided to wipe out humanity outside of "Something to do".

You can't really argue programming because I doubt gero programmed them to murder himself.

They're good guy turn seems to come soley from getting their asses saved by someone stronger... making it not the most convincing good guy turn, seems more like simple acquiescence to a stronger power.
