Forums - Sony - Playstation Doing Great, but it's a different story for Sony - Losses 18% greater than forecast at $1.3 billion for year

How much longer can Sony survive these kind of losses?
That's not rhetorical btw, I'd actually like to know; if they can't pull out of their spiral of red, are we looking at bankruptcy in, say, three years? Five?

Does anyone else find it interesting how mostly MS fans post in a thread about Sony's (terrible) financial situation? Your concern is much appreciated.

Because Sony fans are going to A) post here and B) be honest about the situation?

You just said it yourself moreorless, where are the Sony fans? and if not Microsoft fans then who? Are we not suppose to be interested in this topic?

It's fascinating to see any company struggle like this. Not good, but facsinating.

Oh, don't get me wrong. My comment was both about ms and Sony fans. Sony fans refuse to accept the situation (so they don't post here) while ms fans seem to think that this is good news for ms and them, especially since the xb1 is not doing as well as the ps4. Sony's financial situation might help ms, so if I were an MS fan and didn't care about the other company's employees losing their jobs left and right, I'd treat this as a positive for my favourite company. Or do you think that's not what's happening here at all?

Anyway, I don't want to derail the thread or make it ms vs Sony, so I'll stop here. It was simply an observation on who's posting.

Getting rid of TV will be a huge mistake.

Samsung, while experiencing more growth than any other company in terms of mobile devices admitted the trend isn't going to last much longer. The next big focus ( in 2 to 3 years) is going to be TV again. If Sony drop it, they will regret it.

why?

they have made losses for 8 years straight on TV

thats during the huge boom of flat screen and HD

why would that change?

They should dicth it asap.

They should remodel it. The problem is that they're trying to sell high quality television at a premium price. Most of the market does not care for high quality television or the price tags that they come with. That's why Vizio is leading in sales. What they need to do is just change their business model. Realize that they are not the Apple of the television industry and make cheap, and halfway decent quality televisions.

So will this be the new thing now? Don't worry about Sony or how bad it does, because at the end of the day the japanese government will save them?

Well, if America is anything to go by....yea, it my be a thing. Our auto and bank industry went down the toilet and lo and behold, the government bailed them out and now they're doing decent - good

You're forgetting that these companies had to pay back every cent the government loaned to them. Look at GM, yea they got bailed out, but they had to trim alot of fat (got rid of Pontiac, Hummer, Saturn etc... etc...) as part of the process. In fact, all of them had to trim something. Are you suggesting that if Sony were to go on a similar path, that Japan would bail them out without them having to pay them back or without doing some serious down sizing?

Blu-Rays dying off isn't really too big of a surprise if I'm honest. I also won't be overly sad to see the medium go either, if I'm honest.

In addition, things are getting a little bit heated in here. I'm just going to turn it down a little. I hope you guys will appreciate that and try to stay on-topic and avoid flinging insults or generalizations at each other.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I'm an XB1 fan and I don't really see this relating to Xb1 at all, and as bad as I think it is for Sony I think they are many many years away from the real threat of closing/bankrupcy.

I bet they printed out that report in 1080p and 60 lines per second. So everything looks still great.

Hmm, it's hard to give a specific time frame. This years loss is of course inflated because of the restructuring, but hypothetically if no one intervened (investors etc), Sony could maintain losses of this size for an awful long time. They are doing pretty badly for cash, and are fighting against a rather large debt, but they have have something like $100+ billion in assets (I can't remember the specific amount, and things don't quite work like that, but you get the idea).

I think Seece put it well. Sony are without a doubt doing rather badly, but they are many many years away from any actual threat of bankruptcy or closing down.

Vaio. Is that a laptop brand?

Not only for laptops but their laptops are a part of this. That's the brand you could see in 50% of all movies where someone used a laptop. The other 50% have been Macbooks

How long can this continue without serious problems for them?

Long, I mean look at the American government and their debts. All they do to fix their debts is with making more cash!
