The hardcore gamer audience dont care about Nintendo, the Dudebro's dont care about Nintnedo. Nintendo fans buy Nintendo consoles and families buy Nintendo consoles and so that is who they will always attempt to appeal to. |
One the N64 wasn't a flop, it sold quite well considering they themselves crippled the console from birth by choosing cartridges over CDs. I think Iwata would do backflips naked down the street right about now if it meant the Wii U would start selling at N64 levels.
Two, it's great that they want to appeal to families, but where is this audience? Because they sure as hell are not supporting Nintendo, and Nintendo marketed fairly heavily to the "family demo" over last holiday.
They are content to play games for 10-15 minute bursts on their smartphones/tablets and let their kids play those too. The idea of the "family game console" is outdated and no longer relevant IMO, it's a 1980s concept that Nintendo can't give up on because it's part of their heritage but it's not helping them at all right now.
By the time a boys get to age 10/11/12, they want to play COD and be "cool", so Nintendo relying on this audience is inherintly unreliable as these kids go running to Sony/MS as they enter junior high school. The parent doesn't want to buy seperate consoles for their 12 year old and their 8 year old, so the 8 year old gets the Playstation/XBox as well, they just get to play LEGO Marvel on it or whatever.
