Short version, Sakurai, a freelance game designer, is directing a Bamco team. I don't think any Nintendo employees are involved, but I may be mistaken.

Nintendo employees are always involved in some capacity (especially in an IP-heavy game like Smash Bros, there'll be folks, probably from one of the SPD groups, on staff to advise how characters are implemented and keep a general QC eye on things)
