Forums - Gaming - Xbox One And The PlayStation 4: Weirdest. Console. Transition. Ever.

The first year of the first console (let's not kid ourselves with the Wii U) is always completely dry.

Probably not to this extent because publishers were afraid the industry was about to collapse, but not that far off either. Owning the 360 that first year was pure shit aside from Geometry Wars. I mean, honestly, the PS4 probably already has it better with Infamous being a legitimately good AAA exclusive and a fair amount of good multiplats, and the One has had it better since launch with Dead Rising and Forza.

Maybe they weren't ready yet but i think this more conservative approach is due to the sluggish economy in general. Fewer risks will be made as there is much to lose.

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

I saw this article earlier and can see where the writer is coming from. However, we're still within the first year of the next gen truly starting, and console transitions are always a bit like this.

What makes this generational transition appear worse is that we seem to have a lot of "next-gen" games appearing in a very nice form on the older consoles (out of necessity due to high dev costs). Then we have the lack of backwards compatibility which has resulted in a few "enhanced" versions of last gen games (which for third parties is basically re-releasing the PC version with an 'X1'/'PS4' on the packaging and the odd bit of visual polish). To be fair though, I can think of only 3 games that I could feel "next-gen" (Killzone: SF, infamous: SS and Ryse) to me and that's solely in visual terms. Still early days though.

Can't wait for the first batch of games that really push the envelope (beyond visuals), but I suspect only VR will really make this gen stand out over previous gens.

List of upcoming games for 2014:

Watch Dogs - Ubisoft - May 27, 2014
The Elder Scrolls Online - Bethesda Softworks - June 2014
The Evil Within - Bethesda Softworks - August 26, 2014
Destiny - Activision - September 9, 2014
Alien: Isolation - SEGA - October 7, 2014
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Warner Bros. Interactive - October 7, 2014
Assassin's Creed Unity - Ubisoft - TBD
The Crew - Ubisoft - TBD
Call of Duty - Activision - TBD
Batman: Arkham Knight - Warner Bros. Games - TBD

That's almost one big-budget release per month. Much more than the PS3 had. And I remember buying PS2 games to play on my PS3 to help pass the time. Since I got my PS4, I have not bought any more PS3 games.

I have tons of games i'm looking forward to on PS4 in 2014 alone, but the thing is there aren't any JRPGS other then wonderflick/ff15/KH3 and all those will probably be in 2015, and then we probably won't see any other jrpgs till 2016 =.

PSn - greencactaur
Nintendo Switch FC - SW - 5152 - 6393 - 5140 Please feel free to add me :)

I agree with the author of the op. A game like Beyond looks better, to me, than anything I've experienced so far on PS4 and Xbox One. It feels like the two "next gen" consoles have actually LOST features that the 7th gen consoles have. The controllers have improved and there's a couple of new (kinda useless) tricks like Game DVR and.....I can't think of anything else. The 8th gen just feels like a repeat of 7th gen with higher resolution. Yeah, I love Titanfall but that game felt like it could be a 7th gen game (and it IS!).

Never have I seen such a small leap and they've had since 2005 (2004 if you count the DS) to come up with new ideas for this gen. Have we reached the plateau?

The beginning of a new gen (or the first year) often sucks but there's usually something that lets you know the future has arrived! SSX on PS2, Mario on N64, Call of Duty 2 on Xbox 360--something that blows away the previous gen. Wii U launched with old 7th gen games and when the "real" 8th gen consoles arrived, they haven't done much better. Ryse, Forza, Killzone?

BAH!!

Weird? Feels like a pretty safe transition. Unless being safe is now also weird but 6th to 7th gen was kind of like this. Ugh I don't know anymore.

It is strange, but the answer was pretty much summed up in the article. Developers spreading as wide as they can to lower risks.

yeah, i know.   not that there weren't cross gen titles last gen transition but it sort of feels like there are more of them now.

the worst part, imo, is that even of the "big" upcoming games (the order 1886, quantum break, ect.) we just don't even have release dates.  i'm guessing other than a few gap fillers we aren't going to see anything notable release until the holiday except for (maybe) watch dogs,.. another cross gen title.

The only upside imo is that the lack of releases makes people try out new games they wouldn't have otherwise, like inFamous.  But I think I made the right descision not getting a PS4 yet after getting a Wii U at launch and not turning it on for months at a time.

It all depends on your situation to me buying the PS4 at launch was the right move. I've already got a backlog filling up and that does not in anway include the indie titles just retail. Still working on beating Thief,Infamous, and Rayman Legends. Thief is espicially hard because I'm doing full stealth no one can see me and I can't touch anyone so it's taking a long time. I love it though I love hardcore stealth like that it's rare to see these days.

Then I also have BF4 that I'm playing inbetween the other two as well. I just don't have the sort of time some people do to play games. I only get one really good day to play for hours and hours and that's only every other week. The rest of the time I work and then I go home and workout. After that I have an hour max to play games. That's if I skip watching any of my TV shows.

The thing is, your PS4 backlog is almost entirely playable in some form on PS3 and if they were on the PS3, they'd be overlooked by most people.  Only inFamous stands out and while some praise it (most, actually), I'm not impressed by it.  The gameplay is 100% inFamous and the graphics are good...but not what people make them out to be.  It's open world and probably the best looking open world game ever but it just doesn't do it for me.

All my (admittedly jaded) opinion, of course.

Interesting observations. I'm posting this from a Wii U.
