Forums - Gaming - Final Fantasy VI Turns 20 Today!

Twenty years ago today, Final Fantasy VI launched in Japan. Six months later, in October 1994, it launched in North America under the title Final Fantasy III, since only two other Final Fantasy games had been localized at the time. Since then it's been ported to Playstation, GBA, and mobile platforms.

Final Fantasy VI is considered by many critics and fans to be one of the best role-playing games ever made, if not one of the best games ever made.

Have you played Final Fantasy VI? How does it compare to other games in the series? When, and on what platform, did you play the game?

I actually found a used copy of Final Fantasy III for SNES at a storefront on the showroom floor at New York Comic Con five years ago. I picked it up (along with Banjo-Tooie) because it represented a huge gap in my video game resume. I got around to playing it about a year later and it was a total game-changer for me. It proved to me the potential greatness of turn-based role-playing games and it pulled me headfirst into the Final Fantasy series. It also rocketed into my top five games list, and has remained there since.

I played 6 after 7, 8 and 9 at first on emulation, then later on the PS1 release. Because of the graphical downgrade it affected my experience of the game. But I could recognise how good the game was, characters, story, combat system were all great, more steam punk than ever anything I'd played.

I never got round to actually completing it fully until about 2007, again on emulation.

It is one game I wished beyond words they were fully remake, I feel a lot of 7, 8 and 9s charm will be lost in a remake, as at least they were 3D. But not with 6 but that is because of my experience with it.

Hmm, pie.

I would have loved a FFIII like remake of VI. Maybe a 3DS release one day ?

Best in the freaking series.

While I haven't gotten round to playing FF3 and 4 on DS (maybe I'll do that after I finish/get bored of FFXHD), I didn't like some of the designs aspects they had in the games. Chibi-esques character, characters in battle still just step forward slightly, silly things like that which don't matter in the long run but in my view can change the feel of a game.

I'd prefer a true remake not just like the DS vesionsm they can even put in voices.

Hmm, pie.

I first played FFVI as FFIII on the SNES around 95 when it was in the bargain bin at my local KB Toys. I then played it again on my PS1 because i was completely obsessed with anything Final Fantasy during the PS1 era, heck RPGs in general! Then again on my GBA a few years ago.

I rank this game high on my favorite Final Fantasy games, with it taking the #3 spot only behind VIII and IX. I would love to see a 3DS remake of both V and VI in the style of the remade IV someday :D

Random encounters too annoying in all the FF games I tried except FFX.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

I eagerly picked this up upon release for my SNES. I had drooled over it for months in advance... years if you count the time I waited for FFV, which never game. I is a beautiful title. Interesting story, solid gameplay, cool world fantastic graphics for the time and an epic soundtrack. It made several advances to the series over the previous title.

It did, however, have a few shortcomings. 1, the story - it's less refined than FFIV. It's good, but IV had a clear, classic narrative. FFVI is a bit disjointed and slightly less epic. 2. The characters. Again, they're good, but their story roles are a little less defined than some other titles and their character less fleshed out. 3. Character classes. Equipping the espers can eventually make any character a super character. I'm not a fan of this. I prefer each character to have a defined class as we saw in IV and other titles. Customization is good, but having a Theif or Engineer get all this magic power breaks the fourth wall for me. I prefer the characters to have limits within their game world.

I would put the game a little behind IV in overall execution, though it is superior in many aspects. I rank it 3rd among FF's after IV and X. It's among the greatest rpg's and games of all time.

IOS version ftw!

I can use Cyan's sword tech and not have to sit around and wait anymore. He is finally useful!

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.
