I have a portable USB HDD (250 GB) with use of a y-cable... that HDD was in my PS3 for a few years (until it got too small due to PS+) and I had an external hard drive case laying around.

A Seagate 1TB External HDD with its own power source. Currently have 107 titles stored on it. I have 850GB free space still, and 23GB free on the system itself.

No hard drive as I have 9GB left, with 1 full retail game, around 8 virtual consoles, a few indie games and a few e-shop only games from Nintendo (NES Remix)

Ain't a seperate power supply for the HDD a bit inconvenient? The HDD will not switch on and off automatically with the console this way.

It's not recommended, but I use my old 60GB SSD without external power supply (needs around 2W).

The SSD still has 100% in CrystalDiskInfo after 3 years in a Netbook and 6 months in the Wii U. Still less than 1 TB written. Playing games almost doesn't write new data, but it reads all the time. I'm backing up my games every few weeks.


I know a SSD is overkill with USB 2.0, but ZombiU and has shorter loading times and no more visible texture pop ins (they are noticeable when you load the game from disk, internal memory, external HDD or external USB. Yes, I tested everything...). I'm not sure why a SSD is better than a external USB stick that is much faster than USB 2.0. Are the access times that different?

Man, there should really be an option to install disk-based games, some third-party games suffer from streaming issues. Loading the data from disk + internal/external memory simultaneously would solve some problems.

I was optimistic and put a 2TB USB HDD (with Y-Cable) on the Wii U. I doubt it will ever get close to full even if all my purchases for Wii U continue to be "digital". Just not that many games for Wii U, plus the Nintendo games tend to be small GB size (which continues to impress me how game like Super Mario 3D World can have so much content and good graphics and so small).

Their compression methods are impressive. How can 3D World have a lossless 5.1 LPCM soundrack and be so small (1.7GB from what I've read)?
