Forums - Nintendo - 3DS is cannibalizing Wii U

3D World has as much in common with the Galaxy games as it does with 3D Land. The second half of the game is basically Galaxy 3 as far as I'm concerned.

To be honest too the "upside-down gravity" sections of the Galaxy games weren't all that fun. More disorienting than anything else.

3D World is easily up there with Galaxy 1/2 as the three best Nintendo made games of the last 10 years.

3D gravity physics were one of the central mechanics of Mario Galaxy. Add its spared-no-expense presentation and epic vibe, and it captivated people.

As great as 3D World was, it was nowhere near as impactful; in concept it was a HD sequel to a 3DS game.

The Wii's install base is not the only reason Galaxy trounces 3D World is sales; we can see that with Galaxy 2's lower sales despite releasing on a bigger base. Fans are more attracted to fresh, epic, impressive games than modest ones.

I did not imply that, because Wii U doesn't have a proper Zelda yet.

And I can only hope that Mario Kart 8 does use gravity as well as Mario Galaxy, because that would be amazing.

I'm not convinced the Wii U audience is unaffected by the 3DS, because for the moment it offers very similar material for half the price.

If that were the case then why are 3DS sales also struggling? 3DS is selling about 50% as well as the DS did. WiiU is worse at 20%, but still.

---

IMO WiiU sales are hurt by the GamePad which takes away from gaming as much as it gives, the lack of Wii Sports, and the same games Wii had, just HD. I mean look at it

NSMBU + SLU= NSMB Wii
Wii Party U + NintendoLand = Wii Party + Mario Party 8 & 9
Donkey Kong FP = DKCR
MH3U = MH3

Plus upcoming you have:

Mario Kart 8 = Mario Kart Wii
Smash Bros = SSBB
X = XenoBlade
Just Dance 2015 = Just Dance 1-4

etc. Bayonetta 2 and Pikmin 3 are nice and all, but they have a small audience, don't boost sales much.

3DS is suffering the same problem, more Pokemon, Mario, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, etc. Nintendo needs new IP's, or at least vastly different iterations (e.g. Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube).

3DS isn't struggling. It's lower sales compared to DS are due to Smartphone competition, but it is still selling well.

lets cut the crap, if there was no 3d world, there would be nothing. I dont know why Curl is acting as if there was an alternative. There never was. Ninty didnt think WIi U would be selling as bad for so long, so they needed SOMETHING for the holidays. ANd its easier just to take a game you already made engine and all and customize the hell out of it. Instead of having a brand new game from the ground up, at the very least it would not have been ready by holidays.

I do not believe it was time pressure that produced 3D World, but rather just Nintendo making what they wanted to make instead of what the audience wanted.

didnt say they were time pressured they just needed something for holidays. I dont think Ninty wanted to make it anymore than they wanted to make NSMB2 for 3ds IMHO

It's trending lower than the GBA too. Nintendo has not had handheld sales this soft since the 1990s before Pokemon was created.

That's a big part of the reason why the "doesn't matter if Wii U bombs, like the GameCube days, Nintendo will just make money off their handheld" doesn't work and they are in fact posting operating losses (3 years counting now).

3DS is doing alright. It's selling less then the GBA did in the same time period so I wouldn't say that's particularly good.

Do you disagree that franchise fatigue is not one of many reasons for WiiU/3DS's lower then predecessor sales?

GBA didn't have to fight Smartphone encroachment.

Compare 3DS to Vita...

If they wanted to make something else, they could have; they just had no plan for it in advance and start production earlier.

I certainly agree that Mario's suffering from franchise fatigue after 3D Land, 3D World, NSMBU, and NSMB2 all in 2011-2013

Compare 3DS to Vita...

Both the 3DS & Vita are selling worse then the DS/PSP.

3DS numbers aren't bad, but they are still 50% of DS #'s. Vita's doing bad because the lack of 1st party support. I mean I want a Vita and so far the only game I want is Uncharted (not a Killzone fan, and Resistance is meh).

Do you think franchise fatigue plays no role at all in 3DS's/WiiU's poorer sales?

DS and PSP were not under as much threat from smartphones, and PSP had Monster Hunter to fave its bacon.

Since software drives hardware, Mario fatigue has indeed resulted in it pushing less hardware in my view, yes.
