Forums - Sony - Layoffs at Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge & SCE London Studio

Well London Studio is huge. Hearing about redundancies is no shocker. Guerrilla Cambridge is likely in early development of a new game and doesn't need as many people as they had in the later parts of KZ: Merc development. No clue what the hell is up with Evolution, though.

How does this affect PS4 owners gaming though? (/Snark)

Make no mistake, if Sony weren't broke, they wouldn't be laying these people off. They might be hiring a few more people, but they are laying off way more than they are hiring. The hires might just be to make 90% of fans say 'They're not laying off tons of people, just letting go of the bad people and bringing in new people.'

Sony is in dire financial straits.

You don't know that...MS has closed multiple studios through the years and they have never been in any trouble. It's just a question of viability.

Sony has shed 50% of its assets in the last 2 years. If they do that again in the next 2 years, there'll be nothing left.

Microsoft is worth more than it ever was, and has so much money they could make 300 Lord of the Rings triologies. Literally. I'm just saying, MS can close studios and the smart assumption would be that the studio is underperforming. Sony has laid off THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of people and sold billions of dollars worth of buildings and shuttered several divisions in the last few years, because they are short on money. I hope they can turn it around. Because right now they could win the console war and still need to sell off the Playstation brand and declare bankruptcy if things don't work out with their phones, etc.

@ Bolded - Really? Your comments on this and other threads have suggested otherwise

Not surprising. Get rid of staff and studios you don't need or who have under-performed recently. This will make the PS division more profitable.

Being able to admit reality doesn't equal hoping Sony fail. Not that you would know from the way people seem to think they are mutually exclusive.

Its an insult to somebody who cares as much about electronics and computing as I do to act like I hope one of the first and foremost electronics companies in the world fails just because I haven't bought their inexpensive console. Sony were one of the first in the game of world-class electronics and they deserve respect. I have enormous respect for them. That doesn't make me blind to the fact that they are in mortal danger. I'm sorry that someone being honest about their financial situation makes you feel weird. I am just worried about them. They could do everything right and still fail.

I hope the developers land on their feet.

Wasn't a thread of yours on this subject locked the other day, with the moderator criticising the way you phrased your orignal post?

And everyone knows that Sony has financial trouble, the point they are making is that every descision Sony makes is not only because of this fact.

A thread of the guy who crusaded to have it locked was locked too. So I guess that doesn't prove anything. I haven't worded anything in a way sensitive, first place, most powerful console sony fans can be offended by now. So I'd appreciate it if you didn't bring it up.

hardware is winning? we dont need so much software, have a nice life u are fired...

Why? PS brand is on the rise.....and they are downsizing? wtf Sony.

Sony games don't sell well on Sony systems.

Naturally, unless they are Naughty Dog or Poliphany offcourse

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Unsurprising really. London Studios haven't done shit for years and they're one of the biggest studios Sony owns, people needs to go. Evolution haven't done shit for years (2008 Pacific Rift, which sold 1.29m), only really has one success story (original Motorstorm), and has had Driveclub delayed a fair bit, not good enough people need to go. The biggest surprise is Guerilla Cambridge, as whilst they've never had a massive success they did successfully port down the LBP assets to PSP which sold very well, and it's not like KZ:M has been a disaster as it had fuck all marketing, and it's sold about aswell as you'd expect from a PSV title. KZ:L also showed that the KZ psp games can have great legs, the studio is also small so I can't imagine them needing to sell a great deal to break even.

Ultimately Sony has done the right thing, especially when you consider they're looking to bring Ready at Dawn and Quantic Dreams into the fold.
