Forums - Gaming - I just realised if 720p is so horrible, how did we survive

I still think PS3/360 gen is the worst looking gen in graphics, developers are so new to lens flare, AA and other effects that they overused it, Frame rates, animations and screen tearing got a lot of beating from that Battlefield and Mass Effect are the examples of this (try playing Mass Effect 1 on Xbox now, that game had so much effects to make it look better and it looked like its on VCR or something)

PS2/Xbox days were a lot more colorful and had more freedom in graphic design because they weren't focused on making everything look gritty and like it came out of a Michael Bay movie.

looking at PS4 / Xbox One games there is hope for the better, since now they're not so much focused on upping the graphics rather than make the games run better.

Many people miss my point,
What i mean is that monitors and TVs are ahead of console capabilities
SD during any gen pre 7
FULLHD during gen 7
4k during gen 8

thus outrage about 720p doesn't make sense

if you're able to afford an expensive tv you can afford an expensive pc :)

Consoles are pretty slow, they can never keep up with other markets, which is why I think consoles will eventually go away and replaced with PCs like Steambox or something, unlike Handhelds vs Phones, there is no advantages of consoles over PCs, especially now since everything is digital and PCs are so easy to use, Handhelds have buttons over Phones though, handhelds will eventually also go away and be replaced with phones when they become easier to use.

I'm not a doom and gloom person , ( I am the biggest handheld fan on the site) but I'm hoping this generation to be the last one, gamers will benefit more out of it as games will be much cheaper and easier to make, and console makers can just open stores that are like Steam or just publish their games through steam.

Translated into commonly known resolutions, the PS1 was generally 240p, the PS2 was 360p/480p, the PS3 was subHD/720p, thus the expectation for the PS4 was 900p/1080p (which it thus far has been).

People were especially exited to get to this new resolution because console gamers have been stuck at subHD/720p for several years now, while movies, TV, Youtube and PC gamers have long since adopted 1080p as a common standard.

It's understandable people would be annoyed their new several hundred $ console isn't able to meat the standards most other mediums have long since adopted.

That all said, the situation isn't as bad as many people make it out to be. For the most part the X1 has avoided 720p, and the PS4 has avoided it completely. It's perhaps just bad luck that the X1's 3 most popular titles (sales wise) are all either 720p, or close to it (BF4, COD, TF. I know TF isn't actually in the top 3 yet, but it will be relatively quickly so you get my point :p).

Did you stop reading after one sentence I posted? And first off, everyone knew that the mp wasn't 60 fps. It was just unlocked and was usuaually in the ballpark of 60fps. Here's the guerrilla response,

http://bgr.com/2014/03/11/killzone-shadow-fall-1080p-response/

The reason people made such a big deal out of it was because they knew they could. If a problem isn't fixed seconds after what happens, that's what they'll believe. I bet if there were a similar thing with xbox games xbox fans would praise MS for their enginuity... oh wait,, they did. It's called tiled resources. They're not exactly the same at all, but they're both similar hat tricks. And I'm not saying either are bad, I'm saying the double standard annoys me. Would I rather have "full" 1080p? Yes, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

You can say everyone "knew it wasnt 60fps" yet that didn't stop them from posting 60fps. Hell, look at the link you just posted. Guerrilla says in that very quote that SP and MP runs at 60fps. That link just confirmed everything I said by the way. They admit it's not the typical 1080p, they just find a way to emulate, blurring the screen to hell. But again, that's irrelevant. The point was people were playing a game not native 1080p and not 60fps all while telling us you needed native 1080p and 60fps to be a real next gen game. You can try and argue technical semantics all you want, facts are facts and the point remains. You're focusing on how they used tricks to try and simulate what people were claiming the game to be, I am focusing on the fact that these people couldn't even tell the game wasn't what they were claiming it to be. Toodles.

In many interviews they said it's not technically 60fps. For one comment, they can just shorten their statement. And similar methods are used in other many other games. They aren't emulating 1080p. They're rendering parts of the frame in 1080p and others at a lower res where resolution isn't significant. Is the game technically 1080p? No. Is it for all intents and purposes? Yes. Most games that do use this method would also be called 1080p because it basically is. If you don't understand this and just say they're just simulating it, then you're not getting my argument and are intentionally being difficult. Nice toodles at the end there. Doesn't make you look arrogant at all.

Don't bother arguing with him. It's been explained to him multiple times in the past that using SF as an example for this stuff is pointless. As you said, for all intensive purposes it's 1080p. No one noticed it wasn't because clarity wise it looks damn near identical. Peoples primary complaint was with the motion blur, the majority of which was in-fact added by Gorilla before launch, not directly caused by the 1080p simulation itself (though that does create a small amount itself).

He was also linked a video by JoeTheBro a while back from before the motion blur was added on top to prove this. Personally i think they should have left it how it was, as the motion blur isn't particularly appealing, but that's irrelevant. All of that hasn't stopped him so far, so we can conclude he's either not listening or missing some screws :p

He doesn't seem to be unintelligent to me, so i think it's more likely he's simply happy being ignorant on the topic.

We are simply spoilt now

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

'When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called the people's stick'- Mikhail Bakunin

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

we all survived VHS and no cellphones aswell.. heck we even survived without electricity.. in 10 years you could say the same thing abut 4k, pleasure robots and hoverboards.

It all depends on how much detail you want to see.

320x200, you didn't need 1080p to spot the enemies in this, no snipers though

640x400 further shrunk for performance

640x480 full screen

800x600 sniping possible

1024x768 gotto be able to spot the enemies in the foliage

Since then games have been cranking up the detail but kept 720p as the target resolution (on consoles anyway)
It's about time all that detail is revealed in 1080p (or 4K for the pc crowd)

We also once survived without video games.

Pffft. Like anyone would believe this bull.

4 ≈ One

since the launch of HD tellies and consoles prior to gen 8 only have a few games making that target

EDIT to clarify timetable

HDTV LAUNCH -------xbox360/ps3 below hd ghraphics still ------------- 4k monitors launch ------ Gen 8 --- 720p/1080p ew mah gewd

I have a gaming PC, that's how I survived :)
